and it is stunning that this mechanism has 260 ways in which it can fail. The risk was increased by BP when it modified the valve.

260 ways to fail and it is the ONLY failsafe in existence per Hayward.

2. And it was just part of the problem that caused the gusher.
Even had it worked, the negligent way the well was drilled might have still resulted in a catastrophe of the same magnitude. BP operates many more deep wells; and we only have verbal assurance from other oil companies that they do things more safely -- and that it even matters if they do.

3. Equally stunning that there's talk of using a nuke to shut it down...
and absolutely horrifying that this is even being considered a possibility.

Hearing this live now on MSNBC.

5. I was listening to a podcast where some engineers were talking about...
how terrible this idea was.

Who on MSNBC is talking about it? Scientists or politicians?

6. The show that comes on before Hardball...
not sure of the name (cooking dinner). He had on some sort of expert who talked at length and in depth about the nuke solution.

9. Then they better get the Russians in there to do it.
They're the only one's with any experience shutting down oil well leaks with nukes, but I think they've only done it on land based wells.

before the modifications. This well was going to blow, and the toolpushers and operators knew it.

Simmons from the Ocean Energy Institute says a low level nuclear explosion is the only thing that will seal this well, which has the largest estimated reserves in the Gulf of Mexico. He says there is no way there is well casing in this well, so there is no way a relief well will work.

He says Hayward is lying through his teeth to the Committee, or he is too stupid to be a CEO.
