Agents on Tehran's payroll involved in death squads hold prominent positions in the U.S.-backed Iraqi government and National Assembly, according to an expert on Iran who broke the news about the country's nuclear weapons program.

Alireza Jafarzadeh, author of the new book "The Iran threat: President Ahmadinejad and the Coming Nuclear Crisis," said the efforts by Iran to place its agents in the Iraqi government form a part of Tehran's larger plan to export its revolution.

The U.S. is having such a difficult time winning the war, he said, because Iran is fueling the Iraqis with bombs and weapons that are killing American soldiers.

Tomorrow, Jafarzadeh noted, the U.S. ambassador to Baghdad, Zalmay Khalilzad, will hold a news conference to present a dossier of Iran's efforts to fuel sectarian violence in Iraq.

5. Don't laugh.
The Dawa and SCIRI parties are heavily aligned with Iran in the first place. Granted, they try to blame ALL death squad activity on the Sadrists, the least Iran-allied of all the major Shiite groups, but there is no doubt that Iran is good buds with Maliki, Talibani, al-Hakim... three of the major political heavy hitters in Iraq, all deeply involved in the US-backed Iraqi government and National Assembly.

6. According to Riverbend, they all have their own death squads.
I think I believe Riverbend.

7. Does she say Dawa has its own?
My understanding of why Maliki has been really reluctant to go after Sadr is that the Mahdi Army ensures that Dawa people can walk the streets in their own neighborhoods safely, and keeps Maliki from having to trust the Badr Brigade with his people's lives to a degree that it'd be trusting Iran with their lives, fully, 100%.

8. Sure, Iran is helping out the Shiite factions in Iraq...
Who can blame them? Is what they're doing any different from Poppy and Ronny funding the Contras? (Remember them?) In point-of-fact I would dare say that Iran's immediate involvement in the post-Saddam Iraq was not only inevitable but also easily forseeable. It's like Bush hauled out Pandora's Box and handed Iran the key!

But what of the Sunni Sectarianists? Are we to believe that Saudi Arabia isn't funneling weapons and money to them right now? The Bush propaganda machine has lost none of it's arrogance or obviousness even after the Republican drubbing of 2006.
