posted a thread about two teachers who would be suspended because they held a sign up during graduation ceremonies at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District.
Here's an OPED about the issue in today's Times:
Teaching momentJune 16, 2010
When history teacher Marybeth Verani and English teacher Adeline Koscher raised an "End the War" sign at the senior assembly at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School Friday, they hijacked a special moment designed to honor the achievements of graduating seniors — those heading off to higher education and those enlisting in the armed forces, among other accomplishments.
Yes, our schools are laboratories of learning and public ceremonies have certainly been disrupted by anti-war protests in the past. But we assume Verani and Koscher admire critical thinking and the rights of all students to choose their own path.
At this special ceremony, the teachers should have set aside their political opinions and respected the decisions of the students.
However, should Verani and Koscher be fired, as some have demanded?
Absolutely not.
unhappycamper comment: I haven't heard any response to my email to the principal of the school. No surprise here.
