Democratic group seeks approval for unlimited donations

   A high-powered group of Democrats calling itself the Commonsense Ten has asked the Federal Election Commission for an advisory opinion allowing it -- and, by implication, all independent political committees -- to collect unlimited donations from individuals, companies, and labor organizations and then spend the money on this year's campaigns.

   In a letter to the FEC -- attached below -- the group relies on the Supreme Court's decision in the Citizens United case, which said that organizations like unions and companies enjoy the same First Amendment rights and protections as people.

   Subsequent rulings in lower courts have suggested that spending and fundraising by independent groups also cannot be Constitutionally limited, the group argues.

   "The only logical result is that corporations and labor organizations may now legally give to independent expenditure committees, just as they may make independent expenditures on their own," the group writes.
