The TV talkers tell me the speech sucked.
Time was, that was all we needed to know to know something was good, was that the MSM hated it.

Ah, well. Let us be led. It's the New Marx for DU: "From each according to his biases, and to each his self-fulfilling prophesies." :D

If it wasn't then you spared yourself the disappointment.

7. Lighten up, Francis.
We don't "hate" anybody. We're just used to not trusting the media, except when they tell us what we want to hear. :hi:

See I only want to hear the news. I don't want to be told anything that agrees or disagrees with me. But each to his own.:hi:

17. The media deserves every bashing it gets. It is
complete garbage and everyone knows it. 70% of the coverage is horserace crap -- the majority of the rest spent on crime, natural disasters. Not to mention the topics they do not cover due to ownership, institutional bias and plain laziness. Rachel Maddow does a large amount of good analysis. She is almost alone on the main networks.

Yeah, I don't give a shit what Keith or Rachel think either.

all of the pundits, left and right, are losers. What have those two ever done to solve anything? They just runs their mouths. No different than Tweety or Beck or Limpballs.

40. True, dat! I have had posters hold Rachel up as a font of wisdom at times when I disagreed with her
In fact, by some of the same who are steaming at her now. I find it's best if I know what I believe and form my own opinions with the information I can gather. While it is nice to see my opinion supported and validated by others, at times, it is not necessary.

38. I gotta agree with this.
It's easy to sit pat and talk shit (like most posters here). The real challenge is proposing solutions which none of these assholes are good at. That goes for the right and left.

14. Exactly correct...
Instead of using all this airtime for actual journalism, we get media personalities who are busy making themselves the story instead of seriously reporting the news.

11. The speech was fine...
Not one of his very best, but not bad at all.

The talking heads are idiots. They are just trying to fill airtime to keep you watching.

Clinton gave a SOTU back in the 90's that was universally panned by virtually all the media, when the polls came in it turned out to have been one of the most effective SOTU's in modern history.

Nothing wrong with the speech at all. Obama can't please everyone with each speech, and it would have been silly to try.

13. You know why
For two days they have been writing his speech and he did not deliver their version. Man they are sick fucks.

In the good old days the hacks would wait for the speech and then attack it - now they spend days saying what should be said in the speech and if it doesn't match their version, they start by saying it fell short (of their speech).

This is beyond an inversion of reality.

24. Actually, what I remember is this
but it dovetails nicely with your theory. In fact, I heard some examples of this on Morning Schmoe just today.

They used to build up every campaign speech or address of his with a bunch of things he absolutely HAD to do for this to be any sort of a success at all. Pat Buchanan was the worst, but now Chuck Todd's taken up the baton. "He must connect to the white voters in West Virginia!" "He must completely denounce Reverend Wright!" "He must show he has the liberal bleeding heart of Jesus!" Whatever it was. Then the speech would be done, and all the naysayers were silent because he had approached the thing from a completely different angle, and set a much broader vision, and they were blown away.

This morning, Joe and let's make it someone from that POS Politico, decided this had to be his "Moon Shot" speech. Oy vey.

Overall, I thought it was a good speech, but a little rambling in the later parts. I think the future of energy independence section could have been tightened up a bit.

26. I don't even know why he delivered the speech tonight
He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't - the hacks have already decided this is his Katrina and it's partly his fault. If he had shut up about off shore drilling he would have been in a commanding position.

I just wish he'd left all that god business out of the end. Otherwise there was nothing new or original.

It really is getting tiresome.

I like the sec on energy independence too, seem most on DU are acting as if he never gave that part.

The talking heads at MSNBC are generally favorable with what he has to say after the speech. If you can find it, look for post analysis of the one at the Democratic Convention and the one after the SOTU.

27. You are correct.
I was thinking more in terms of the other media. I was surprised by the MSNBC talkers. Like the others, they seem to be impatient to hear specific plans even though the contingency planning for something of this scope should have been going on over the past 30 years rather than the past 30+ days. Obama says he has had a panel of experts advising him from the beginning and I have no reason to doubt that.
