The Navy officially accepted delivery of the future USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) from General Dynamics Bath Iron Works during a ceremony in Bath, Maine, DDG 109 is the 59th guided-missile destroyer of the Arleigh Burke class.

DDG 109 successfully completed combine builder's and acceptance "super trials" in May which cleared the way for delivery. Because of the maturity of the class, the Navy holds only one round of trials on each ship prior to delivery, instead of separate builder's and acceptance trials. This "super trial" requires less time, fuel and manpower than the typical method. The ship performed well for the Navy's Board of Inspection of Survey (INSURV).

"We're proud to deliver Jason Dunham to the Fleet on cost and on schedule," said Capt. Pete Lyle, DDG 51-class program manager in the Navy's Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships. "The sustained production run of DDG 51-class ships has allowed the program to incorporate lessons learned and leverage improvements to make the ship construction process more efficient with each successive delivery."

Jason Dunham is one of two Arleigh Burke-class ships scheduled to deliver to the Navy this summer. Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding will deliver the future USS Gravely (DDG 107) in July.

The DDG 51-class ship is a multi-mission guided missile destroyer designed to operate in multi-threat air, surface and subsurface threat environments. These destroyers are equipped with the Navy's Aegis Combat System, the world's foremost integrated naval weapon system. The class provides outstanding combat capability and survivability characteristics while minimizing procurement and lifetime support costs due to the program's maturity. The DDG 51 program continues to reinforce affordability and efficiency, with a commitment to deliver ships at the highest possible quality.



unhappycamper comment: At least this is not one of those $5+ billion dollar DDG-1000 POSs. I do question the "affordability" comment. IMO, we have enough of everything to kill the planet two or three times over.
