US top court snubs Canadian-Syrian torture appeal

WASHINGTON — The US Supreme Court Monday refused to hear an appeal brought by a Canadian-Syrian who was wrongly arrested in the US in 2002 and expelled to Syria where he was held and tortured for a year.

Computer engineer Maher Arar was detained in New York in September 2002 following a tip-off from Canadian police who suspected him of terrorism.

He was then expelled to Syria by the United States, where he was detained and tortured.

Arar was later cleared of any suspicion by the Canadian authorities, and won an apology and compensation from the Canadian government. He has sought to win something similar from the US government, but his case was denied in the first court and then later by a New York appeals court.

The refusal by the Supreme Court to take up the case means Arar's last legal avenue is effectively closed.
