So I used the word "trippy" during a staff meeting today
to describe a book I had read. The mega-fundie colleague to my left busts out laughing and then pretends to be puffing a joint. I ignored it and continued describing the book. I have nothing to be afraid of since I don't use drugs (but this fundie is very aware of my leftist position on an array of issues) and I do damn good work. I'm torn. Should I confront him about this and let him know I did not appreciate the slight?

2. Try mimicking
thumping a Bible when he talks. if he objects, tell him his actions were just as offensive.

4. IMHO you already missed the opportunity.
Look right at him and say "Please don't do that, it's offensive" right when the taunting is happening is, IMHO the right thing to do, and then quickly move on with the business at hand. IMHO the advice to bully him in return is likely to backfire on you.

IMHO if it happens again I'd just confront it right there in front of whoever is present and quickly move on.

5. Don't sweat it.
The Bible's trippy too - just try reading the Book Of Revelation or Ezekiel.

6. Ask Him - Earnestly - If He Has A Drug Problem
Tell him that you noticed that he made movements that indicated his familiarity with drugs, and you're concerned. When he says he doesn't use drugs, have an edge in your voice that indicates that you don't believe him. And remind him that our door is always open if he needs help. Maybe hand him a pamphlet on drug abuse.

(should scare the shit out of him)

10. LOL
No THAT is some advice. I would have a hard time pulling it off myself, but it would be the most comical response!

I'd probably let it slide, I am sure everyone else in the meeting thinks the guy is a whack-job too, and his antics reinforced it.

13. And if he keeps denying it...
Say that you'll pray for him.

He'll *HATE* that.

ask him, in the most concerned, caring voice you can muster, if that means he needs a smoke break. ;)

8. No, but I would plant " thinking rumors" about him
in a sullen, concerned fashion. Ask others their opinion regarding his behavior of late...hint that he seems to have a bit of an irritable side lately, he frequently refers to drug usage with amazing insight, ...maybe he spend too much time in the bathroom; does he come in to work tardy, not get his work done....Be friendly to him to the point he does show his dislike for you on impulse and looks like he lost his temper. You know where I'm going with this.....Take the target off your back.....With a smile and kindness.:pals:

25. There's that word again!
I just looked it up on Amazon. Looks very interesting and the etchings are super. My hick library doesn't even carry it! So off to the book store. Thanks. I'll have to do "drugs" when I read it so I can find it "trippy" too.

Speaking of children's cat books here's one my daughter liked. That little cat with the red scarf! Also, another is "The Fire Cat". Both enjoyable if you like cats, even though it's for children.

17. Thanks, everyone! Great responses.
I tend to be slow on the uptake in these situations, so I did blow a chance to spoof his reaction. I like the guy, but I have never had to work with someone who wears his religion on his sleeve like he does. He likes to rib people for using "big words" during staff meetings. He holds prayer meetings for staff before school which I have no problem with, but, man that's pretty uber-xtian, no? No biggy.

It may not have been a slight- He may have just been acting silly (which he does well, is a real goof-ball and a geek and I admire him for that because I am a pretty odd fellow myself, though likable like he). He has, however, made a few other subtle digs at my beliefs and at my teaching about evolution.

24. Please document time, place, and who was present. He sounds that he knows something
you don't and has already put your position in jeopardy. Also document the prayer group members and time of meetings in a public facility, etc. Sounds like you may also need a lawyer(civil rights) from outside your area to get your contract renewed.
