Deer In My Front Yard This Morning
Edited on Sun Jun-13-10 08:21 AM by Dinger
Hi DU. Maybe this should go to the Photography Group, but I'm not in donor status right now. Not too much extra money right now. Mods, if this isn't ok, just move it. I thought I'd post this as something all DUers might like, whatever side of the fence you're on, so I hope you all enjoy it. I took the pics through the window on our front porch, so the quality isn't perfect, but you get the idea.

Momma and baby:

Baby, eating:

Here he comes:

I think junior is hungry:

Had to take a pic through the railings:

Working her way back into the woods:

Let's go baby. I see Dinger looking through the window:

Time to go . . .

3. Sometimes the best things in life are free. We had one
get inside our fence one day and couldn't figure out how to get out..we live in town. We had to open the gate and herd her in the right direction.

50. I'm really surprised the deer couldn't figure out how to jump the fence again and get out
You would be surprised how high they can jump. My family had a big fenced in garden when I was growing up. The fence was about 5 ft tall. Kept out most critters, but not the deer. They just jumped over and ate whatever they felt like. My mom got tired of Bambi and his friends eating all of her vegetables and demanded my dad do something about it. He didn't want to resort to the time or expense of building an entirely new fence, so we "extended" the existing fence with chicken wire (which we happened to have on hand) and raised it up to about 12 feet high. Problem solved, right?

Next morning we found a clump of deer hair in the wire. Don't know if he managed to clear the fence, but he damn sure tried. I said "If a deer's gotta work that hard to get a meal, I think he deserves to eat it". My mom didn't agree. Of course she also wasn't happy when they started eating her roses, which were on the other side of the house, and not protected by any sort of fence.

75. Our fence is 6 ft. chain link and in the front it's 4 ft. chain link.
I don't know if it even tried to get out, it was running around the yard so we just herded it to the short part of the fence.

16. My Birthday Is In August
I usually go to Packers training camp in August. My and my best friend go. We're kind of like Lucy and Ethel in Hollywood, except it's Green Bay. But let me know, and I'll hang out. The only DUers I have ever met in person is my mom, and wonderful as she is, it would be cool to meet someone I like so much.:)

22. We're heading to the north shore. Between Duluth and Canada.
It's gorgeous. We've been up there before and always wanted to go back. We're also like a Lucy and Ethel pair. We take a trip somewhere every year. Can't afford plane tickets this year so we're driving north.

I'll let you know when we finalize our plans.

It's great fun to meet DUers. There were a bunch of us in DC three years ago for a march. We had a blast. We also used to have meet ups here in KC. I still hang out with a couple DUers who live here but they hang out more often on Facebook nowadays.

23. Beautiful pics,
That's one of the joys of living in the country, you get to see these wonderful little moments of wild animal life, little daily dramas of nature.

I was mowing my yard the other day and stopped to watch two hawks who were cruising around above my back field. They had gotten into the territory of some nesting bird (couldn't tell what it was, about the size of a blue jay). This small bird was battling the hawks, getting in close where its airborne agility served it well as it swooped and pecked and drove those hawks away from its territory. Funny to see, I think that the hawks were after the rabbits in my back field, not little songbird fledglings.

Thanks for the pics, they're beautiful.

I live in the middle of the woods and see deer all winter, but have never seen the new fawns in the spring. They keep themselves to the forest during the spring and summer, and we see them after their baby spots are gone.

It's hard to feel anything but peaceful watching them, isn't it? :)

I see deer frequently here, too, but my dog chases them off, so it's usually at a distance. Right now I've got the horses free-ranging around to keep the cheat grass low while I figure out what to do about the rest of the weeds, so the sight from my front deck isn't so gracious. Roses, lilacs, trees, and...WEEDS everywhere. I can see horses out my windows, and they'll come right up to the deck to see what I'm doing (and if it involves food, lol.)

Known more than a few people who've sustained major damage due to "deer strikes."

98. ARB bull bars are great.
Most of the aftermarket 'off road bumpers' sold in the US are thin gauge, mild steel, and serve only as damage amplifiers when hit by anything bigger than a housecat.
