my thoughts on what makes illegal immigration an issue
Here is the thing. I think that really a lot of people are happy that a lot of Hispanics are in this country illegally because their racist ideologies can finally be legitimized. They see illegal immigrants as an excuse to go Bull Connor on people. This way anyone who opposes this will be laughed at for "being against our countries laws." While the border problem does need to be fixed, many on the left (or at least me) are afraid to go too harsh on illegals because I realize that immigration is the only way that Arizona or Texas can vote for democrats. California was the same way AZ or to a lesser extent TX is now 20+ years ago.

Sometimes we over think issues.

2. Is pretty simple
The corps want cheap labor to undermine US wages and labor protections, and the socialists see a proletariat which they think will vote in their favor. They then shut down any debate by calling anyone who questions this arrangement either a racist or anti-business, depending on their angle.

3. Immigration
There is, and has been, a terrible illegal immigration problem in this nation...ever since the Mayflower.

4. I was able to follow your logic (and agree) until about halfway through your post, but....
...I'm just not sure what you mean when you say:
"many on the left (or at least me) are afraid to go too harsh on illegals because I realize that immigration is the only way that Arizona or Texas can vote for democrats."

I'd really like it if you could explain what you meant by that.

I think your first thought touches upon a very important point:
fanatical racists really do NEED minorities to be present in society,
to serve as targets for their sensless hatred. That's an excellent insight.

5. why i don't want the government to be too harsh on immigrants is because
in Texas or Arizona it will be difficult for those states to vote democratic unless the wave of immigrants continue to pour into the state and many naturalized citizens continue to vote. The whites aren't holding up their end of the bargain. Even in the democratic year of 2008, McCain got 59% of the white vote in AZ, and 73% of the white vote in Texas. If the Hispanics can keep coming in, they can overwhelm the white republican majority. It also helps that many of the white republicans will move out of the state and go to their next "promise land." Again if this is too offensive or brutally honest, I will delete this to avoid being banned.
