Barbour fails to represent state

June 11, 2010

GOV. HALEY BARBOUR has yet again gone out of his way to avoid meeting with the president of the United States and other Gulf-state governors to discuss dealing with the spreading BP oil spill.

The first time, Barbour went to the northwest corner of Mississippi to speak at a ground-breaking ceremony for a factory rather than meet with President Obama and the governors of Alabama, Florida and Louisiana.

This time he went all the way to New York City - to attend the 31st annual Mississippi Picnic in Central Park.
After the first snub, we said the governor had made a terrible mistake and was undermining the solidarity of the Gulf region in meeting the threat of this unprecedented calamity.

But we still held out hope that the governor would wake up and participate fully in efforts to protect Mississippi's ecology and economy.

That hope is fading fast.

Gov. Barbour is going out of his way - far, far out of his way - to be both discourteous to his president and uncooperative with his peers. And by his absence, he is failing to properly represent the state of Mississippi.

1. Barbour is an unreconstructed racist.
It's not surprising that he's trying to avoid President Obama. What a total tool.

2. Isn't Barbour associated with some group the SPLC deems a 'hate group'
Sons of the Confederacy or something?

doesn't seem surprising that he avoids meeting with Obama, in that light.

4. What an embarrassment.
The bright spot in this is the Biloxi paper calling him out on it, though, so there may be hope for them.

6. Yeah, and his "What oil? The beaches are beautiful. Come on down!" shit steamed me.
Exactly the sort of thing FOX loves to push, and as I recall that's where he pushed it.

7. Barbour is running for President in 2012
My opinion is he doesn't want to have to shake hands with President Obama and be treated by the GOP like Charlie Crist in Florida.
