West Hartford, CT, United States (AHN) - A Connecticut man trapped on the floor pinned under his furnace was forced to start amputating his arm. Jonathan Metz began cutting after two days when his arm reached a gangrenous state.
Metz, 31, told doctors he was slipping in and out of consciousness during the two day ordeal. He succeeded in using several tools nearby to begin cutting just below the shoulder on his left arm. However he couldn't finish and left some fat.
A concerned friend called police and firefighters to Metz's home after the trapped man missed a softball game and a co-worker said Metz hadn't shown up at work.
Upon entering the home, authorities found Metz in the basement and proceeded to finish the amputation. Doctors were unable to reattach the limb but Dr. Scott Ellner, a trauma doctor at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, said "It was the right thing to do."
He went on to say that the infection could not be allowed to spread, "This man saved his own life."
