City paramedics on leave as LAPD investigates stabbing

Updated: 06/10/2010 09:09:40 AM PDT

Two Los Angeles firefighters were on paid leave Thursday while police investigated their account of how one of them was stabbed in a downtown hotel three weeks ago.

Charles Anthony MacDougall was stabbed May 18 at the Cecil Hotel, 640 S. Main St. His injuries prevented him from accepting a Paramedic of the Year award the following day during a ceremony at County-USC Medical Center.

But no suspect has ever been apprehended, nor has an explanation been released about what MacDougall and his partner were doing at the Cecil. Also unexplained is why MacDougall may have told his partner not to tell his wife or his girlfriend about the attack.

Police sources say investigators are troubled by inconsistent statements made by MacDougall and his partner.

The stabbing was reported about 10:50 a.m. May 18 in the Cecil Hotel, according to Los Angeles police. Surveillance video shows the firefighters were separated for about eight minutes.

MacDougall was upstairs in the hotel, while his partner was in the paramedic van, the coffee shop and in the Cecil Hotel's lobby, according to police.

MacDougall, who has nearly 10 years with Los Angeles Fire Department, told police he was in the coffee shop next to the Cecil Hotel when he learned a man needed help upstairs. He said he went to assist the man on one of the upper floors, and somebody stabbed him in the elbow and several times in the body.

MacDougall's partner told police he did not see who told his colleague talked to, but that MacDougall came out of the coffee shop and told him someone needed to be examined.

The firefighters entered the hotel through the coffee shop. MacDougall went up the stairway, while his partner stayed on the ground level. The partner eventually went upstairs and found MacDougall bleeding from stab wounds.

Both firefighters were have been placed on paid administrative leave.
