CHENNAI: In a tacit approval of the "rebel" employees' union at Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), the management on Wednesday was forced to negotiate with the striking members of the unrecognized union. The negotiation was brokered by the state government.

As per the tripartite MoU signed on Wednesday, the management will now have to sit with the "unrecognized" union and officials of the labour department in a new six-member committee to review the cases of 35 employees out of 67 employees dismissed last year.

The management — despite calling for disciplinary action against the 200 employees who were arrested for obstructing work — had to heed to a "request" by the state labour minister T M Anbarasan to not initiate any action. The employees are likely to be released soon and expected to join work.
