http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=engA spring of decreased productivity for Dominion Virginia Power's nuclear reactors in the state is continuing, this time with the emergency shutdown of one of the two reactors at the utility's Surry facility. Yesterday's shutdown means three of the utility's four nuclear reactors in Virginia are running either not at all or at less than full power. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Surry's Unit 1 was shut down yesterday morning after an electrical problem led to several valve failures, setting off a reactor trip. "There were no radiation releases due to this event, nor were there any personnel injuries or contamination events," the NRC said. The 799-megawatt reactor along the James River in Surry County is in hot standby mode, meaning it remains partially heated to facilitate a quick return to service. Surry's Unit 2 continues to operate at 100 percent of capacity, according to the NRC. That pump failure came on the heels of a refueling outage that lasted nearly twice as long as usual, also due to equipment failures.
