I-95 In Florida Is Deadliest Road In United States
<snip>

"Driving on I-95 is enough to make even the most seasoned drivers scared. And according to new research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there's good reason to fear for your life when you take I-95 in the state of Florida.

Using NHTSA numbers, the Daily Beast website found that the 382-mile stretch of I-95 in the state of Florida is the deadliest roadway in the United States. The Daily Beast used the fatal accident number rather than total fatalities and then divided that by the number of miles of that state's stretch, according to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald.

So how did Florida come out? As anyone who tries to navigate I-95 in the morning or afternoon can tell you, it's not good. It turns out that I-95's fatal accident rate was 1.73 deadly accidents per mile in Florida from 2004-2008."

1. Not really too surprising to those of us who drive it.
The toll expressways here in South Florida didn't exactly help matters -- at least when they were first installed.

3. Yep. I've seen some major nasty accidents in Florida.
I had to drive I-95 morning and evening, five days a week for a while and I hated it. I would actually leave work late sometimes to avoid the rush hour.

I saw a Palm Beach girl cause a horrendous accident that killed several people once. She flew by me going well over 100 mph. Shortly, I could see smoke and fire in front of me. I knew she was involved. And she was. She was injured slightly, but was responsible for several deaths due to her insane driving.

She was late for a tanning appointment. :(

15. Me too, Drove it for 20 yrs, from the Palmetto (Spaghetti bowl) to the Civic Center
The best driving time I ever had, during the afternoon rush hour that is, was after Hurricane Andrew when they suspended the HOV rules, (because they didn't have to cops to enforce it.) When they reinstated the HOV rule, traffic backed up to it's worse of worse again.

Some days, I'd just get off and take 7th or 22nd Ave down, but those really weren't the best choices either (especially 7th Ave).

Taking the Palmetto to the Dolphin and back was horrible, too.

I am so thankful I'm retired and don't have to do it anymore.

Oh, yea, what was really fun were the summer thunderstorms. I've gone through 3 or 4 on an afternoon trip home. Thunderstorm. Sun. Thunderstorm. Sun. Thunderstorm. Sun. Then you get home and say such and such road was flooded, and your family looks at you like you're nuts since they've only seen a sunny, dry day.

4. Route 95 is a death road everywhere, even here in the Northeast.
Everyone drives too fast, the road is too narrow and in bad shape in many spots.. Connecticut is a good example. A road from hell.

I drive that a couple times a month to visit my mother. I hate every mile of it.

8. I-95 , I-75 and I-4 in Florida are at 250% of design capacity...
.. they are carrying 2 1/2 times the traffic they were designed for.

Of course there is no money to fix them.. we are too busy ssending $9 Billion a month to Afghanistan to train tribal leaders and rebuild their villages.

20. Sorry, we're too busy trying to protect our precious interchanges which are far more costly
therefore, they must be more valuable to put more cars on the road.

Or so I'm told around here.

we cannot NOT afford to push light rail/streetcars/etc.

28. I'm with you.
Sounds like commuter rail could help, too.

And, quite frankly, Florida's landscape is an ideal place for high-speed rail.

Cheers!

10. How are so many states where it doesn't regularly snow on that list?
What are people doing on the roads in Florida?

I thought the people around me drove crazy, but that is over three times more fatalities per mile.

11. I-10 & I-80 in CA are fucking ridiculous
After sitting in rush hour for 5 hours on I-10 (driving to SO CA for my fathers service) I vowed NEVER to drive that piece of shit again.

14. On a recent drive down to Florida, I-95 south became a picnic after passing D.C.
I've always lived in close proximity to I-95/295 and the NJ Turnpike, so I've seen the horror stories, and been stuck by some of them too.

The only ones that I've not been on are I-10 in California, I-59 in Louisiana, and I-55 in Tennessee.

16. A couple of those represent very short stretches of road.
#6 I-59 in Louisiana is only 12 miles and #9, I-95 in Delaware is only 23 miles.

Driven on every single one of those roads, one end to the other.

17. So I read that it's busy above.
Is it dangerous from the get go, or are there just too many people trying to go too fast? (I'm having a hard time imagining that it's got a whole bunch of twists and turns and ups and downs, but I have no idea.)

22. The part I drive the most (Miami Dade County) is mostly a straightaway.
There's a lot of ramps, special lanes for HOV, etc., but not many twists and turns.

Just too many cars on too little roadway going too fast for conditions.

I was totaled by a reckless driver 4 weeks ago on I-95 @ 79th street in Miami. The traffic slowed and the person behind me barreled into the back of my car.

Good times!

19. that last mile or so going south before
it turns into US1 always made me white knuckle the wheel. traffic is moving at 65-80 mph and has to drop to 35-45 as 95 turns into a surface street

21. So much of this nationwide could be resolved if we made people
prove they were capable of operating a car or truck before they were given their license. It's insane the minimal 'qualifications' needed here to legally drive.
