Jan Brewer (insane gov, AZ) hesitant about another law...
Edited on Mon Jun-07-10 08:56 AM by havocmom
She isn't quite sure about supporting a ban on texting WHILE DRIVING, even for teens.

http://azstarnet.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_6c237d7f-8a2a-5ff5-8ac9-cd7d871b1d96.html

...

The governor's comments came Friday as she signed a proclamation declaring it to be "Teen Texting Can Wait Day." Speaking at a Phoenix high school, she said the use of text messages has grown exponentially, resulting in more drivers' paying less attention to what's happening on the road.

Friday's event also launched a public relations effort paid for by AT&T, one of the nation's largest cell-phone carriers, in conjunction with Phoenix Children's Hospital. It urges teens to sign a pledge vowing not to text while driving.

Brewer, however, was cool to the idea of a mandate.

"Hopefully, with the kinds of programs that we're seeing instituted here today, . . . that won't be necessary," Brewer said. "Teens will understand that it is very dangerous and it is incumbent upon them to not text if they want to be safe and keep their friends safe."

...

So for an activity which is causing accidents, possibly some deaths, she just isn't sure about the need for a law? Hell, that abstinence only stuff isn't working in AZ (or anywhere else) and that is pretty much the model for what they are doing on the texting while driving issue: 'Please wait'.

Need laws that allow citizens to require law enforcement to shake down brown people, but don't need a law to ban an activity which is a serious safety issue. Ol Jan, she has a priority. She doesn't want to bother people who text while driving, so long as they don't look like people who might have come across a line in the desert.

maybe ol Jan favors teens being killed in car wrecks? Sure would help her budget problems: less need for school funding, less need for more roads. Hey, it might even free up traffic cops for more shakedowns of people whose looks Jan does not trust.

5. Same way a lot of AZ guvs get in: be the Sec of state when governor leaves
GOP guvs usually leave in disgrace, what with impeachments and/or federal indictments.

DEM guvs tend to leave boots first or because somebody really needed their skills at the federal level.

The latter is how ol Jan moved into the guv's office; Janet Napolitano got tapped for Dept Homeland Security. Many sensible people in AZ (and there are some of those) are pissed at Obama for calling Napolitano to his cabinet and leaving AZ with the idiot. Janet Napolitano did a good job of keeping the mental midgets in the state legislature well supervised and reasonably controlled.

8. When Janet Napolitano was chosen for Homeland Security
She was first in line of succession as Secretary of State which she was narrowly elected to by 23,000 votes.

11. Strategy--she positioned herself as SoS with eyes on Gov. office
The Daily Beast had an article on her with insider views that she shrewdly planned to use SoS as a springboard to the governorship (as others have done in the past). She was already in the right place at the right time when Napolitano was appointed to HS. If Napolitano hadn't been appointed, Brewer still planned to run for Gov.

2. Since the US Supreme Court upheld corporate personhood...
She's having some qualms about the affect of a law that would even restrict corporations as they text while driving around in their fancy Hummers and Benzes.

It's a toss up about where she'll eventually come down on this issue.

3. "Teens will understand that it is very dangerous"
Based on that logic she is going to repeal laws on wearing seatbelts, having cars inspected, carseats, DUI, etc.

I mean everyone knows
* not wearing seat belt
* driving unsafe vehicle
* not using carseats
* driving while drunk

are all dangerous .... especially teenagers. Hence no reason for the law.

4. Are we certain she isn't one of the Munster family members?
You know, they fill up the trash cans instead of emptying them.

They spread dust around the house instead of removing it.

They encourage weeds to grow in the yard, etc.

Everything this woman does seems to go against basic human decency, fairness, and common sense. Of course, the Munsters were at least a friendly bunch, who would be happy to help anyone in need. I guess that eliminates Brewer. :eyes:

12. There is no reason at all to ban texting. It's already BANNED
Every single state has laws about reckless driving.

Now, I am fairly certain no state has a law against driving with your head actually inserted in your ass. I would expect to get cited for reckless driving if an officer spots me driving while my head is literally up my ass.

Why should texting be any different? If you see someone texting while driving, pull them over and cite them for reckless driving. Why do we need another law saying the same fucking thing.

13. She signed a law making fireworks legal in Arizona... bone dry Arizona.
Within a week, some kids playing with fireworks burned down their house and killed the family dog (smoke inhalation).

Cities are enacting ordinances to ban them within their borders but that won't help in the high country. We will have some nasty fires this year.

She's an idiot. And she pals around with idiots.

21. A recent poll had Goddard, the Dem challenger, leading 47-44:

Terry Goddard Leads Jan Brewer In Arizona Gov's Race: Hispanic Voters Flocking To Democratic Candidate

State Attorney General Terry Goddard (D) leads Republican incumbent Gov. Jan Brewer in Arizona's 2010 gubernatorial election, according to a new survey from Public Policy Polling released on Tuesday.

The poll finds Goddard ahead of Brewer 47 percent to 44 percent in what is becoming an increasingly competitive match-up. An earlier poll from several weeks ago found the candidates to be locked in a tight contest, highlighting a dramatic shift in the race since last fall when the Arizona governor held a 10-point lead over her Democratic challenger.

Hispanic voters also appear to be flocking to Goddard -- his support among that group has more than doubled since September. Hispanics prefer Goddard over Brewer by a 71 percent to 25 percent margin, according to the poll.
<snip>

Where Brewer was getting only 59% of the Republican vote in our last poll, she's now at 73%. But Goddard has seen a similar improvement in his own party, improving from 77% of the Democratic vote to 88%. The main reason for the overall tightening is that where Brewer trailed Goddard by 12 points with independents previously, that's now just a 2 point deficit.

Terry has fought the good fight, for a long time, against a very corrupt establishment in AZ. He would be a good gov.
