Vigilante patches up his street
Vigilante patches up his street

Smacking into the same street craters outside your home over and over can get maddening.

So Zac Handler applied a little pothole vigilantism, along with some concrete mix he picked up at a local hardware store.

“People were swerving like the slalom in the Olympics, trying to go around the potholes,” the 27-year-old medical school graduate said.

His frustration peaked the last weekend in May, after he left his apartment on 38th Avenue near Jackson Street. He was reflecting on the zigzag ritual he'd been perfecting the previous six months when he saw a Lowe's store.

“I thought ‘How hard can it be?' ”

Handler explained his peeve to experts inside. He walked out with a bag of materials and got on his computer to double-check the procedure.

1. "He didn't have money to spare, either...
and flinched whenever a tire on his Lexus sedan met a hole.

Must be nice not to have that kind of money.

As much as I admire this guys initiative, be prepared for the libertarians to crawl out of the wood work to use this guy as an example. "the government is a mess, we can do it ourselves!!"

2. in fairness his Lexus may be and old as dirt hand-me-down.
my jeep was nice when i bought it...in '98. And while it has been babied and runs great and looks pretty good...it is worth about $10 to anyone BUT me. Over 300K miles...

3. after Katrina some reporters did a historical view of government and its obligations>
Around time of Depression, there was a strong contingent who felt charities should be the ones helping out destitute and needful Americans. And back then there were more fraternal organizations thriving to help out members.

It was interesting to see how some things never change.

5. My parents had to get help from the Salvation Army. The Red Cross wouldn't help them.
Growing up my Dad would always give to the Salvation Army, and especially around Christmas. He was giving back for when he needed help for his family. My Mom & Dad said the Red Cross wouldn't help them by even giving them food when they fell on hard times, so I've never given to the Red Cross since. My favorite charity is the Salvation Army who were the only ones to help when my parents needed it the most.

8. No
Don't blame the no-tax/tiny tax folks.

Blame the bureaucrats who always cut the things government does where it hurts people the most. That way, they will get you to vote more money for them.

Do you lay off the librarian and close the library or do you lay off the "executive assistant" to the city manager so that he might have to do some of the scut work?

Do you fix some potholes or do you buy new furniture for the mayor's office?

Government big and small has no more morals than does business big and small.

If a government says they need more money, just give me a copy of the org chart and a stack of non-recourse pink slips. I can save them a lot without touching anything where it serves the public.
