Anyone know where I can find reliable and current statistics for Hispanic-Americans?
I'm looking for a good source for the number of Hispanic-Americans (or any designation for those who come from South and Central America) who are given legal American status each year?

Also, does anybody know a source that can provide a guesstimate as to how many are here illegally?

Thanks.

9. Another vote for Pew...
It's the most reliable single-site location for that information.

3. Well, you spelled "librarian," correctly, so there's still hope for you.

5. Illegal "hispanic Americans"?
How many illegal US citizens are you expecting to find?

6. Good catch.
Shows my bias. I don't for one minute believe that Hispanic Americans won't be inconvenienced by this law.

7. Imho, it shows how well propaganda works.
Hispanic or Latino now automatically attaches to "illegal".

8. The double speak surprises me. No wonder everyone is confused.
The supporters claim that it's a fair law and that anyone can be asked for papers, but when pressed there are plenty of people who freely admit that the reason for it is because they have a border problem. i.e. too many latino illegal immigrants.

10. "Illegal" immigrants--and legal immigrants
They CLAIM it's directed at "illegals."

But, more broadly, they want to make the state an inhospitable place for anyone of Hispanic heritage, and those of Mexican heritage in particular--including U.S. citizens and legal residents.

They want to deport as many as possible and chase out as many as possible who will leave voluntarily as a result of intimidation.

The message is: You're not welcome here.

If they succeed, they effectively suppress the vote of a population predisposed to vote Democratic--and sustain the power of white conservatives to dominate state politics for a longer period of time (even though some of them know, deep down, that change is inevitable--it's only a matter of time).

11. Wouldn't this have the effect of giving the legal residents the motivation
to go out and vote these idiots out of office?

12. With a sizable majority of residents supporting the law...
the calculus on the conservative side is that they have little to fear from a backlash.

That could change if the debate brings to public attention information that counters RW propaganda re: border crime in AZ and the actual status of border security.

15. Right. And they say that because they have been told immigration
and crime are up, both not true.

23. I broke down with that one.
This is what the right-wingers fear will happen to them, and then they go and do it.

Just opens your eyes to how they think. Lots of projectionism.

26. And Pearce, like so many of these nativists/white supremacists,
turns out to be a wife beater. I watched a documentary about the militias and their membership is riddled with wife beaters, drug dealers, people who wind up shooting each other, car thieves and fencers of stolen property. The only thing most of them seem to have going for them is their hatred of people of color.
