Creator of John R. Wooden Award dies hours before award's namesake
An amazing coincidence, if you ask me.

Richard 'Duke' Llewellyn dies at 93; L.A. Athletic Club executive began John R. Wooden Award

Official conceived of annual award to recognize outstanding college basketball players. He remained friends with the former UCLA coach despite a rift over use of Wooden's name.

Richard "Duke" Llewellyn, the longtime executive of the Los Angeles Athletic Club who conceived of the John R. Wooden Award given annually to the country's outstanding men's and women's college basketball players, died early Friday of congestive heart failure at Hollenbeck Palms rehabilitation center in Los Angeles. He was 93 and died just hours before Wooden.
