8. unidentified company has yet to issue their own recall.
(nice that they keep thier identity a secret)

<snip>
A third, unidentified company in the Midwest, has yet to issue their own recall.

If this recall is announced, it would mark the third time the FDA has been wrong in believing that the recalls are over.

10. HuffPost | FDA: The Faith-Based Dining Administration (FDA full of beliefs but few facts)
Edited on Tue May-08-07 11:39 PM by Shallah
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-goldstein/fda-the-faithbased-dini_b_47970.html

Twice a week I sit in on the FDA's media teleconference regarding our growing food safety crisis, and twice a week I come away struck by the difference between what officials believe and what they actually know. As a born agnostic and a fan of science, I can fully appreciate the FDA's reluctance to express absolute certainty. But as a devoted father and pet owner, I can't help but find their reassurances less than reassuring.

First we were told that none of the adulterated wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate had made its way into the human food supply, and then we were informed that a mere 6,000 hogs had eaten feed contaminated by "salvaged" pet food. Next it was chickens. 3 million of them. Slaughtered, butchered and eaten by unsuspecting Americans.

Then 20 million more chickens, and today another 50,000 hogs... not to mention the God-knows-how-many fish in the US and Canada raised on farms now known to have received Canadian fish meal manufactured from contaminated Chinese flours.

Still... not to worry, we are told, because large manufacturers are "unlikely to have exposed their animals to large amounts of the tainted pet products."

Since this story has all but dropped from headlines, I've gotten quite a few very important updates from them - some of which I have posted here on DU. It's full of good info!!

11. I was just notified of Costco Kirkland brand dog food recall
The notification came from a company in Ogden Utah called American Nutrition stating their records indicate I purchased Kirkland Premium Dog Food between August 2006 and April 2007. These cans will have a code on them that reads "Best if used by Aug 21 08 through Best if used by Apr 15 09." Immediately stop using any Kirkland Signature Lamb and Rice Canned Dog Food. It said the recall was voluntary due to potential contamination with melamine.

It then goes on to say "There have not been any out of the ordinary pet illnesses reported with this dog food".

The date that is on the case, most recently, purchased falls into that category. As I'm sure were others that have been purchased over the last months so I wanted to find to find out more information.

I called, and reached a customer service person, at the 800 number they had listed for questions, comments, or concerns.

When asked Why this information was just now coming out, no warning a month or more ago, the lady had to put me on hold to ask. Her reply, on return, was that this was the rice in the food, different than the previous recall, and that they had just found out on Friday. That seemed
odd as Friday is when the recall notice came in the mail. Then I asked if they were certain that the food was contaminated or unsure and she replied that they were certain.

It felt like my heart fell to my stomach. On asking if there had been any reports of animals sickened from it she said yes. Then, after reading, to her, the assurance that there had not been any out of the ordinary pet illnesses reported with this dog food she said "Well just vomiting and diarrhea, and that sort of thing". Well All fucking righty then. The conversation continued, but it didn't get any better. Worse actually.

12. My friend's dog died yesterday of kidney failure from Costco food.
He came home from having the dog put down to find a recall notice from Costco in his mailbox.

13. I got that same recall notice.
Good thing that I immediately threw out every can of wet dog food on the first day the news came out. I wasn't taking any chances.

It's all homemade food from now on.
