Halliburton Pours Money Into Campaigns Of Congress Members Who Will Investigate Oil Spill.
Just when you think Halliburton couldn't be any more blatant, and Congress members couldn't be any more corruptible, it gets worse. No, we don't need publicly funded campaigns! Nope:

*****As Congress investigated its role in the doomed Deep Horizon oil rig, Halliburton donated $17,000 to candidates running for federal office, giving money to several lawmakers on committees that have launched inquiries into the massive spill.

Gee, I wonder why. Do you suppose they simply want them to let them know there'll be no hard feelings if they should find Halliburton at fault in some way? I'm sure it's something like that.

*****The Texas-based oil giant’s political action committee made 14 contributions during the month of May, according to a federal campaign report filed Wednesday — 13 to Republicans and one to a Democrat. It was the busiest donation month for Halliburton’s PAC since September 2008.

Of the 10 current members of Congress who got money from Halliburton in May, seven are on committees with oversight of the oil spill and its aftermath.

10. I'm sorry, but $17,000?
I would be insulted if I were a congressperson who could be influenced by donations and all that Halliburton could manage to scrape together was $17K to be split seven or ten ways.

I'm not entirely being sarcastic. I mean, either someone's corruptible or they aren't. And if someone's vote could be bought, why is Halliburton cheaping out? They must have more money than God.

19. I'm constantly amazed at how cheaply politicans can be bought
Often, corporations spend 10's of thousands of dollars to get laws changed that net them BILLIONS.

The ROI is so impressive, how can corporations resist?

22. This isn't a one time deal, that was only for the month of May.

Halliburton and those Congress People know this gravy train is not stopping after just one month, the increased payoffs will last so long as the Congress focuses on the Gulf Catastrophe; which could be a very long time and again during the run-up to elections.

If Halliburton had shoveled hundreds or tens of thousands over all at once as you suggest, the increased political risk, particularly during an election year would have been too great.

So they just feed them an elephant one bite at a time.

Edit for P.S. And this doesn't even take in to account whatever BP and/or Transocean sends them.

They don't care, and they have made sure this is legal.
