1. Ok now fill me in.
Jaws cut the riser pipe and it's off the BOP now?

What did it look like, what happened when it was cut?

Oh yeah, and good morning to all.

10. Thanks :)
Hugh and I both think that's the cut that was made yesterday to shorten the riser, not the end that was cut at the connection to the BOP. There's no bend in the pipe.

Thought you might have snagged it just this morning, but makes total sense.

Still quite informative as to the scale and configuration, especially with respect to the drill pipe.

9. Awesome.
It looks better than I thought it would. A chimney belching oil. Now when will they put the top on it?

I have another feed up and it looks like it's been evened out more...did Jaws bite it twice? Or maybe I just can't tell.

the riser is gone, there's only one outlet for oil, at the top of the BOP.

29. I'd have designed the Top Cap with locks that swung under the flange and could be tightened down
Edited on Thu Jun-03-10 10:22 AM by HughMoran
...like you see on high-pressure containers with removable lids. With a good sealing material and enough pressure, they ought to be able to seal to that flange really tightly.

Here's the type of clamp I'm talking about - they could swing under the flange and the ROVs could tighten the wingnuts:

31. Cap in next couple of hours......
BP successfully sliced off the riser pipe that is leaking oil into the Gulf of Mexico, Coast Guard Adm. Thad W. Allen, the federal incident commander, said on Thursday. But the cut is irregular, and placing a cap over the gushing oil well will be more challenging than initially hoped, he said.

Admiral Allen said during a briefing Thursday morning in Metairie, La., that the cap was over the gusher and that workers expected to lower it into place in the next couple of hours.

39. The cap I'm talking about goes around the flange, not the pipe
Just so I'm clear.

They have two caps, we want the one that goes around the flange - the cut oddness should be irrelevant!

57. Methanol has very low freezing point.
-149 deg Fahrenheit.

So even methanol diluted into oil should substantially lower freezing point of the solution.

Kinda same concept of salt on roads. The salt lowers freezing point of water thus preventing freezing.

Was showing a close-up of the ROV working below it, and it was using the circular saw to trim the edges of the cut above the BOP. Didn't get a cap, unfortunately, and now it's on a long shot.

Edit: one of the other ROV's has moved in closer. Got this:

64. Clean your windshield, sir?
Check your tires? How's your oil?
