Costner’s Oil Spill Weapon To Get First Open Water Test
"BP recently approved open water testing of the actor’s centrifuges — capable of separating 97% of oil from water at a rate of nearly 2,000 barrels a day per machine. After several delays, BP is expected to test six of the massive devices in open water later this week. If successful, their implementation could mean big things for the Costner’s company, Ocean Therapy Solutions. He said some 26 units are ready to be deployed, should the tests prove successful."

I'm starting to think that it may literally come down to just isolating the spill and containing it with these and other machines. Kevin, if these work, I'll go out and do something I'd swore I'd never do: rent The Postman.

1. The question is, why have they waited so long?
These machines have been in the region for weeks.

3. Want my guess?
Pride. They didn't want to admit that a liberal Hollywood pussy could do what they couldn't. They had to try, and fail, with all of the stuff they had on the table.

2. I think that is what the centrifuges are- copies of The Postman.
They 97% suck!

4. If they work as advertised
Then they definitely suck, in a very good way.

5. The link in the article to the LA Times is from 5/21.
Does this article purport to have newer info, or just recycling two week old stuff?

9. I know THIS article is from today, but it cites no sources other than
An LA Times article dated 5/21. It doesn't quote Costner or anyone from BP that tests are being conducted today or yesterday or last week-end. It just cites a two week old LA Times article.

10. Good point
I am hopeful that this is current because of how they mention that it is currently being tested after delays, but I can't find any other stories on it.

I'm starting to think BP may really be pissing on a great opportunity here.

11. If it were current, it would have a source and a date
indicating something other than what's in the original cite.

In other words, NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE.

7. I expect these to be somewhat successful
Oil and water don't mix and a high speed centrifuge should successfully separate the two.

8. I agree
And even if they're only "somewhat" successful, we can build enough of them to remove more oil from the gulf than is spilling out and contain it to an isolated area. Better than half the Atlantic being dead.

12. If these things work, forget the Oscars, Kevin will deserve a Nobel prize.
(I thought the "Postman" was OK. WAY overlong but OK.)
