Cop who saved fawn faces jail, fines
Cop who saved fawn faces jail, fines
Ohio Division of Wildlife wants fawn Thursday

TOLEDO, Ohio (WUPW) - Toledo police Sgt. Mark Fry, who resuscitated a newborn fawn back to life after its mother got hit by a car might be facing jail time and possible fines.

His wife might also face fines and jail time. They are accused of keeping the fawn at an undisclosed location while it is being nursed back to health.

The Frys said they won't turn the wildlife animal over the Ohio Division of Wildlife because they are afraid the deer will be euthanized.

After a pregnant deer was hit by a car May 20 on Arlington Avenue near the University of Toledo Medical Center in the city's south end, Sgt. Fry worked with the fawn by giving it CPR until it started to breathe.

Since then the Frys have taken care of the animal, nursing it back to health.

2. Let them nurse the deer back to health. Then it will be released during Ohio's deer hunting season.

4. Aww
Good for them. I can't believe that they would be threatened with jail for nursing a baby fawn back to health. That's insane.

6. At the link it says it's illegal to keep a deer.
The situation really has nothing to do with it - the law is the law, unfortunately.

But it's illegal to keep a deer and that's why the Department of Wildlife came to the Frys home Wednesday morning. State wildlife officials said the fawn is a wild animal and it is not safe for the average pet owner. The state also worried about any diseases the fawn may have.

10. It may be the law
and it sounds like the officer is practicing civil disobedience by not capitulating. Hence why I said good for him. I'd hate to see baby Bambi euthanized after being saved. (Hey, I get why these laws are made, but I am an emotional creature who likes baby deer.)

5. A New York State Trooper saved two fawns after the doe was killed by a car.
They are now recovering at a wlidlife rehabilitation center.

From: rochesterhomepage.net

Two fawns have a state trooper to thank for their lives. News 8's Matt Molloy tells us why the baby deer almost didn't make it into the world.

State Trooper Rob Weston has been to plenty of accidents where deer have been hit by cars.

"Usually you get there, you fill out a report and that's the end of it," said Weston.

But last Wednesday along Knickerbocker Road in Ontario was different.

It is the plan to prosecute, rather than work with this member of the public to educate them and to get the orphaned fawn transferred to state care that appalls me.

23. if they can keep a deer then everyone can. Or not. Which would you prefer?
People would go get one, out of the forests and bring it home. People would sell them. People would hold canned hunts on the animals they felt they owned.

Deer aren't suitable as pets, they are wild animals.

Or maybe you want to mount a campaign get these folks licensed as a care facility. Might cost some money, but you could help out if it gives you a feeling of meaningfulness.

The sad fact is that you can't allow people to keep wild animals just because they want to.

I say, Keep wild animals wild.

25. No, I expect some common sense and not to prosecute
Edited on Thu Jun-03-10 12:15 PM by hlthe2b
as long as someone who comes upon a orphaned fawn works with the state to transfer it as early as possible to an appropriate refuge/rehabilitation center.

You know not everything has to be made a big damned problem. Common sense can win out occasionally. Citing every straw man argument doesn't win you points any more than your snarkiness as it is not even germane to the issue at hand. This man was not trying to own deer, but only ensure the survival of an orphaned fawn. :eyes:

9. Norman is at an undisclosed location. :)
http://www.wtol.com/Global/story.asp?S=12586671

snip: Fry says they cannot find a rescue group to take the baby deer named Norman, so he is staying at a local farm. She refuses to say where the deer is because she says she fears he will be euthanized.

Snip: She says she is willing to be arrested. "I would never ask my husband, because that would be his job. But I feel strongly enough about it that I would."

---------------
I hope they're able to keep Norman safe.

16. It's a sad world
when taking care of a suffering little creature becomes a crime.

Lately, there are times when I feel as if I've walked on stage and realize this isn't the play I was engaged for. Don't know the script, don't know what's happening. What am I doing here? Kindness and compassion are being punished...

11. My Father saved a fawn yesterday morning. We heard something crying loudly next door>
It was a fawn caught in our neighbor's pool. We did the "right" thing and called Wildlife Services who had someone tell us to wrap it in a blanket til someone got here.

The guy was really nice. He rubbed the fawn and put her in the sun. We kept an eye on her and last night the Mom came and got it.

Of course the guy got attached-he saved the animal's life, and the wild-life says they don't know if they will euthanize it? Hello? Get a clue.

30. Latest update: Norman is on the run. He escaped from their back porch.
http://www.wtol.com/Global/story.asp?S=12590671

Baby deer missing amid wild animal controversy in Toledo

snip:

On Wednesday night, Fry and his wife, Darla, said they could not find a rescue group to take Norman. They also refused to say where the deer was over fears it would be euthanized.

Then they changed their mind. "We decided it wasn't worth risking Mark's job, so we had them bring the fawn back and we stuck him on the back porch," said Darla.

Thursday morning, they said the deer was gone. The Fry's don't know if the young buck broke free and jumped the fence or squeezed out the gap in a gate. They also say it's possible someone decided they needed to rescue him. "We have no idea where he's at now," Darla said.

A couple sets of antlers can make a nice "chandelier" though!

33. Weird that it's against the law to save/rehab a baby deer due to fear of spreading wasting disease
but yet people are given the ok to eat wild deer.

I'd understand if they were transported across state lines and of course we can't control deer that may come across state lines but Ohio has made it illegal to possess/rehab any wild deer. Babies whose Mom's are killed are to be left to die or as the state says, hopefully adopted by another Momma deer.
