LA TUQUE, Quebec — An acrid haze drifted over vast pockets of central Canada and the northeastern United States on Monday as smoke from scores of northern Quebec forest fires settled over the region.
Public health officials in Canada and the United States were urging people with respiratory problems to stay inside or avoid exertion outside where the smoke was heavy.
In northern Vermont, the haze and odor were the talk of the town Monday, but spokesmen for Fletcher Allen Health Care and the Burlington Police Department said there had been no reports of individuals with respiratory distress due to the smoke.
“We did get a high volume of calls asking about the source of the smoke, and advising us of it,” Burlington Police Sgt. Andrew Frisbie said.
