Within an hour of returning to his Chevy Chase home Tuesday, former Ambassador Edward Peck was fielding calls and telling his story.
"They came up in assault boats very quiet, muffled and the moon was out and they didn't come up the moon path and the next thing you know they're coming over the sides of the ship," Peck recalled.
The flotilla was trying to bring relief supplies such as medical equipment to Gaza, a thin strip of land between Israel and Egypt that has been the subject of a blocakde since Hamas took control in 2007.
Israeli commandos raided the six ships, which were traveling together. The 81-year-old diplomat say the masked soldiers were armed when they took the ship in international waters.
"What we intended to do was to lock arms around the wheelhouse so they couldn't get in and take that over," Peck said. "We didn't get enough so the Israeli soldiers broke through that very easily."
