Poll question: Trickle, Leak, Spill or Gusher,
Which of these most accurately describes the release of oil in the Gulf?

Of course the best overall adjective is "catastrophe" but for the purposes of this poll, we won't be including that one.

3. It's a spill...
Edited on Tue Jun-01-10 02:23 PM by SidDithers
an enormous, gigantic, behemouth spill of epic proportions, but it's a spill. Spill is what these environmental nightmares have been called since they began having them.

Trying to change the language is no different than Fox News trying to push the term "homicide bomber" when everyone and their brother has been using the term "suicide bomber" for years.

5. But if oil men strike oil and it shoots in the sky with great force they call that a gusher.
This is shooting up directly from the Earth in spite of having almost one mile of ocean water pressing down on it, it seems to me describing this as a spill would come out of FOX's playbook as a means to verbally undermine the severity of it.

Words are important and the word "spill" doesn't do this justice.

6. Right, the term "gusher" has meaning we all understand...
oil shooting out of a well on land.

In the ocean, it's called a spill. It's always been called a spill.

Fox would try to change the terminology to push an agenda.

7. Language continually evolves and has never been static.
So far 85% of the people here believe Gusher to be a better description, what is their agenda?

8. I'd like to see "plume" changed to

massive pocket of BP crude or something to that effect.

Even tho the definition is "the form of effluent in water or emissions in air",

plume doesn't sound ugly and horrible enough for this disaster. I'd love to know what George Carlin would have called it.

:puke: :puke:

9. George Carlin would have probably used a good number of those words that
you can't say on television.
