It wasn't a 'gaffe', it was deliberate.
Folks, he wasn't extemporizing, he was reading from a speech which had been carefully written, rewritten, and typed in large print. He planned the whole thing for any of a variety of reasons already elucidated in one thread or another.

Point is, that this Administration is reminiscent of the Seinfeld episode where George does everything 'wrong' and it all works out for him: he gets a job with the Yankees by insulting Steinbrenner, gets the girl by doing the exact opposite of what makes sense. This crowd does everything exactly wrong: leaves people on the streets after Katrina, starts a war with Iraq when it's others who attacked the Trade Towers and the Pentagon, suppresses minority voting while screaming about representative democracy in other countries, the list is endless. The difference is that they screwed up so terribly that it will take a nation of three hundred million souls decades to recover. Maybe.

No one told them that Larry David writes comedy shows not historical plays. this schtick doesn't work in real life.

1. He can barely read My Pet Goat, what makes you think he can read a speech?
I don't care HOW LARGE THE PRINT IS...

*'s just a dumbass, this was not deliberate.

(like me), they wouldn't know what you were talking about. Although, their curiosity would be piqued. :(

9. Still have no idea what's being discussed.
Sometimes it feels like DU has private cliques that talk only to each other.

Bush meets the Queen - and she ages 200 years
By Rupert Cornwell in Washington
Published: 08 May 2007

The Queen's state visit to the US reached its climax yesterday as George Bush welcomed her to the White House with trumpets, national anthems a 21-gun salute and, it must be recorded, yet another presidential verbal stumble.

After 55 years on the throne and having met US presidents stretching back to Dwight Eisenhower, the 81-year-old monarch by any standards is one of the most permanent fixtures on the international scene. But even she was not around in Philadelphia 231 years ago, as Mr Bush almost implied.

"The American people are proud to welcome your majesty back to the United States, a nation you've come to know very well," he said in front of 7,000 notables and not-so-notables assembled on the South Lawn of the White House on a sunny, spring morning. "After all you've dined with 10 US presidents. You've helped our nation celebrate its bicentennial in 17 - in 1976," he said.

Of course, it was 1776 when representatives of the original 13 colonies issued the Declaration of Independence from the Britain of her distant ancestor George III. Only two centuries later did the present monarch travel here, to participate in the lavish bicentennial celebrations.

As he realised his error, America's current King George looked somewhat sheepishly at her. She looked back at him from under her hat. Whether she was amused or not was impossible to say. But Mr Bush rescued himself with deft self-deprecation: "She gave me a look only a mother could give a child," he said to much laughter.

one of his stupid "off the cuff" insults that he so often doles out to pump his own self up by deflating others.

Did you notice at the toast last night that the monkey had a look of total contempt on his face?

He shows complete disrespect for world leaders in order to encourage the xenophobia of his followers and "prove" that he's somehow top dog. Insulting the Queen and then laughing and winking is exactly his MO. The man is a complete sociopath and what's normal for him is appalling for everyone else - and he doesn't give a shit.

by not sipping the champagne (he sat down and left the Queen standing there drinking on her own).

24. yeah, I noticed that
At first I thought he'd put the glass down because it was booze and he doesn't drink (in public) but then noticed that his glass had water in it. When he sat down just as she was starting to drink from her glass I knew he was just being a rude, ignorant bastard as usual.

16. I'm certain you are right.
He's made screwing up such a part of his schtick that now it's done on purpose and it's a great way to diss the Queen. Show her who's boss.

They think people need to be reminded that HE is the HMFIC of the US. Apparently.

I'm sure the whole thing was carefully scripted and he actually did pretty good by not screwing it up. Rove knows to keep it simple though.

It's unfortunate that he doesn't realize the presidency is a little more important than that.

23. Deliberate. Absolutely. Such an arse, and a national disgrace,
especially after our ally stood with us during the greatest foreign policy debacle in the history of our country. Bet they wish they hadn't shed a single drop of British blood for Chimpy's disaster NOW. BTW, I loved that episode--especially when Elaine looks all dorky and defeated at the diner, and says, "Do you know what's happening? I've become George! I'm George!"--still cracks me up!

26. Yeah but your MSM dutifully covered it as a gaffe
and it is the ultimate in diplomatic insults. I can't think of anything worse which does not involve his direct use of profanity in a public venue directed AT a foreign leader.
