I'm home!! Picture heavy.
Edited on Mon May-31-10 07:54 PM by MichaelHarris
I've been in Montana for three weeks working on the Sacajawea project as well as tribal recognition for the Lemhi Shoshone. Some of us have refused to use the "Mormon" name of Lemhi and now use the ancestral name of Agai'dika. I only use the "Mormon" name here to make the distinction.

Some of the students have been working on plans to secure a national park in honor of Sacajawea. We also hope to secure tribal recognition for her people, the Agai'dika. I was asked to document the field school via photography and video. I just had a real bath for the first time in three weeks, that was no match for the beauty of the Agai'dika people.

Sacajawea's people are NOT federally recognized as a tribe anymore, they must share a reservation in Idaho. the United States saw fit to put her on currency but NOT recognize her people. if you feel strongly about this please write your Congresspeople and demand they act now. It's also time to recognize Sacajawea with a park, there are many beautiful locations to chose from. Not only will it unite people, it will create jobs for the region. Think of the CCC or the WPA.

5. Michael- Google Sacajawea/C.S. Kingston
C.S. was my grandfather, an historian who taught at Eastern Washington U for many years. There's a building on campus dedicated to him. He married a Crow woman, an orphan who was adopted by whites in Lodge Grass, Montana. He wrote extensively about Sacajawea, Lewis and Clark and the Inland Empire. I am proud to have Crow blood mixed with my Irish and English. Perhaps C. S. Kingston can give you some info.

35. A National Park in recognition of Sacajawea?
Seems a bit over the top, since most of what we "know" about Sacajawea was invented by Grace Hebard.

Read: Inventing History in the American West: The Romance and Myths of Grace Raymond Hebard by Mike Mackey.

Hebard constructed a nice story about Sacajawea, but she didn't base it on facts.

Most National Parks have been designated such for the purpose of securing unique natural places so they won't be despoiled, not to commemorate individual persons.

I guess you could go for a National Monument wherein the visitor center would focus on myths vs factual, documented history.

Federal acknowledgement is a nightmare though.

I worked with a few tribes in the East TERMINATED with that a-hole Blumenthal (CT) leading the charge.

This is a very difficult business. Not leaast of which because the powers that be in the Casino tribes are so well connected to the Bushbots and they want NO new groups recognized as being legit by the feds. Its all about the money

shame shame shame on those who will destroy such beautiful peoples and cultures and lives.

Blessings to those who help (like you)

If you have any thoughts on how I might help let me know (with the actual effort, not the lobbying stuff - I know the BIA system of acknowledgment almost by heart)
