1. Nice Presentation of Data

It makes the scale much easier to appreciate on a visceral level. A lot of the "helpful suggestions" that have flooded the internet don't seem to take the magnitude of the depth into account.

2. the Oil Drum is also helpful in that regard; until reading it, i didn't realize

the sea floor in the vicinity of the bp well was a bit like a bowl of pudding, thus making it very difficult to establish any firm footing for any containment structures or the like;
