BP CEO: "I would like my life back."
"Disruption".

======

BP's CEO said Sunday he's sorry for the largest oil spill in U.S. history and the "massive disruption" it has caused the Gulf Coast, telling reporters the company hopes to corral most of the crude offshore.

"The first thing to say is I'm sorry," Tony Hayward said when asked what he would tell people in Louisiana, where heavy oil has already reached parts of the state's southeastern marshes.

"We're sorry for the massive disruption it's caused their lives. There's no one who wants this over more than I do. I would like my life back."

158. I'm sorry, that was a crime against humanity.

Sheesh! Rhetorically, I could wish that Rush Limbaugh be dipped in crude just to illustrate how "natural" does not mean non-polluting, but I would never really wish that.

I stated a fact. In past times they would have been tarred and feathered.

What is it with some DUers that they always feel the need to imply that no other is as pure in mind and heart as they? :eyes:

230. Sorry if I misunderstood that, but the context of this subthread . . .

. . . I mistakingly thought you were saying that was SANE. Could you at least see where I might have been tempted to draw that conclusion?

Plus, it was historically inaccurate. They tarred and feathered people for a lot of things, none of them for continent-sized oil spills. So, might I be forgiven for thinking that your post was not factually based but an expression of your emotions?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. The object is not to act purer in mind and heart, but in an age where we should be thinking about restoring rights and justice to people, I think when people say something barbaric, somebody must point it out, purer in mind and heart or not.

And, yes, they tarred and feather people for all manner of scoundrel-type behaviors--theft and corruption included. All which might fit here. Third degree burns and death were the result in most instances, though most of the stories we've all likely heard echo the cartoon version--as though it was just a little messy inconvenience.

No, of course most of us would never condone such actions, though we certainly harbor dreams of justice in the form of long long jail terms for those guilty of wanton negligence or worse. I know I do.

238. Like you yourself said - in any sane culture.
In the past people in this nation went out and pulled apart the Customs Houses unfairly taxing and penalizing them and their families - brick by brick. (Howard Zinn as source- and this occurred in 1830's or 40's)

Closer to this time period - in the last Major Depression, around thirty states of the then forty eight that made up the nation had laws PROHIBITING FORECLOSURES!

And then of course, there was the good ol' fashioned tarring and feathering that often took place in time period leading up to the Revolution.

But we have become a more Christian (ie CorpoRATe) nation. We see it as far better to off without mercy people in Iraq, Afghanistan, and folks on boats heading to Gaza, then to deal with the real terrorists!

260. Just as...
a failure to understand ambiguity and the need for a 'strong' leader are traits that conservatives share (see the study http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:mzB4mftyxmcJ:psychoanalystsopposewar.org/resources_files/ConsevatismAsMotivatedSocialCognition.pdf+conservatism+as+motivated+social+cognition&hl=en&gl=us&pid=bl&srcid=ADGEESgji7ys_4NiihFPsfVp6kyc5dyWLvHl_38BmAQiZ4LiA4brEU81IQjdDwbFNlr52J-7txe-FRePNgGQFtlosh0-fHFp0DHtg_RTEL6a9zvRAMS-NgDIXEsTUdIVoOonaYpcQu0D&sig=AHIEtbS8XJGElpYLYTRxs9lsYid_3FntRg">Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition), so too do we liberals have our own problems and you touched on it very aptly. Let's be honest with each other on this: liberals do tend to see themselves as the 'better' people, and in many ways we are when it comes to compassion, justice, education, etc. I have no problem with that. Just look at the likes of Limbaugh or Hannity and their followers. The question is how to deal with this mindset when interacting with the other side. Sometimes it demands more patience than we can muster in the face of the malignant ignorance that dominates the right.

Personally, I'd have no problem keelhauling Limbaugh in the middle of the oil spill and that's not hyperbole. But, hey, that's just me.

207. Tarring and feathering BP wouldn't happen, hlthe2b.

With all the dead birds on the beach the feathers now come already tarred.

Thus, tarring and feathering BP could be done very efficiently.

That would represent an efficient use of resources.

Not likely in our wasteful society...........

Which would be sophist, twisting the meaning of words in insane ways. You can't come up with a law that executes them after the fact, that would violate ex post facto.

A right to a speedy trial would also be sophist if you construe it as a right to a kangaroo court. In other words, you'd have to twist or break at least three amendments/rights to accomplish what your saying.

In other words, no, it wouldn't be the sane thing to do.

So, he expects us to feel sorry for him that his life is inconvenienced by this? This guy is way out of touch with reality. If BP is smart, they should shut him the fuck up and put in one of those phony spokespersons that can take their "I don't give a shit about the problems we caused" and turn it into one of those fake "We really do care" positions.

Corexit, reportedly banned...in Britain. Brit CEO Hayward probably didn't know, when BP refused EPA order to switch to less-toxic oil dispersant. Besides, the dispersant is manufactured by BP's "sister company" Nalco, so it must be safe to use (with or without a self-serving profit motive).

"We made a few little mistakes early on."

12. Disruption???
A disruption??? That would imply a temporary interruption, wouldn't it??

No, I'm pretty sure the way of life for many of those in the Gulf is over. What are those in the fishing industry supposed to do? Go back to college? For what? The MULTITUDE of job openings available? To compete with people who have been looking for a job for months, if not years, but can't find one?

Mr. Hayward, I hope you NEVER get your life back. May it be disrupted by a nice, long prison sentence ... or at least made hell by the public for years and years (since we all know you probably won't go to jail).

Doesn't matter who says it, I would agree. Sorry, but when someone from "the other side" says something I agree with, I'll give credit where credit is due.

I'll thank you to stop trying to tell me what I would think and do in any given situation though.

PS: I've never been anti-death penalty.

I should be ashamed? OK, that's your OPINION and you're entitled to it. I'm entitled to disagree and not be ashamed. No regrets. That's how I feel and I'm just being honest about it.

I mean, talk about using the one sentence that absolutely positively should NEVER be uttered under circumstances where not only 11 human beings have died, LITERALLY, but millions of other life forms as well.

If he had instead said "I would like my life-style back" even then he'd get justified criticism, but nowhere near what he's due for using the phrase he did.

Who's to blame for the oil spill? Dick Cheney
By Alex Pareene

http://www.salon.com/news/politics/war_room/2010/05/03/dick_cheney_halliburton_oil_spill

The Gulf of Mexico oil spill could end up being the worst American man-made environmental catastrophe of this generation. With the oil still spilling and investigations into the causes yet to come, it's too early to neatly assign blame to any one person. But for now, let's hold Dick Cheney personally responsible for the whole thing.

Here's the evidence: The Wall Street Journal reports that the oil well didn't have a remote-control shut-off switch. The reason it didn't have a thing that it seems every single offshore drilling rig should have? According to environmental lawyer Mike Papantonio, it's because Dick Cheney's energy task force decided that the $500,000 switches were too expensive, and they didn't want to make BP buy any.

Is that not enough reason to blame the former Dark Lord of the Naval Observatory? Guess what: Halliburton is involved, too! The Los Angeles Times reports that BP contracted Dick Cheney's old company to cement the deepwater drill hole. Cementing the hole was, according to the U.S. Minerals Management Service, "the single most-important factor in 18 of 39 well blowouts in the Gulf of Mexico over a 14-year period." And Hallburton is already under investigation for faulty cementing in an Australian well last year.

The spill will very likely destroy the fragile economies of at least five states and it could even plunge the nation back into a recession. So thanks, Dick. Nice work.

like to know what happen to the Iraqi oil? Someone told me on another post yesterday that there is no oil coming out of Iraq now, at least not that much after I had questioned why the Iraqi people who are displaced from their homes have not received any money for them to rebuild. I always thought that had a lot to do with the invasion. Any ideas?

43. The eleven men who died would like their lives back also.
However, no one person is responsible for this. This is decades of a deliberate handing over of this government, this country's assets to private Corporations.

We can't say we didn't know. But even on progressive boards we now have apologists for handing over to private industry, public funds such as the shifting of the Medicaid Funds to private Corps in the HCR Bill. That had and still has so many defenders, despite the abysmal and even criminal record of those corporations.

It's hard to know where it began, but there are a few prominent names I can think of. And anyone who, after this, continues to support the privatization of this country, shares the blame.

And he says HE would like his life back.

Let me tell you something, Mr. Hayward, even though your company is responsible for perhaps the biggest man-made marine disaster in the history of mankind because you cut corners in the name of profits, you'll still rake in millions of dollars this year and not have to worry about losing your job. In addition, you'll continue eat at the finest places on the planet, take vacations 99% of the population can only dream about, live in any one of the several lavish homes you own, never have to worry where your next meal comes from, and in the end, not really care what you or your company did to the Gulf of Mexico this year.

Where I'm sure he'll meet plenty of the affected coastal residents - fishermen, tour boat operators, restaurant workers and owners - who turn to crime and/or narcotics in the wake of this mess.

This is what the Republicans forget and what the American capitalist system literally fails to take into account, but when you make profit-driven decisions that hurt people or communities, the rest of us pay for it. We lose jobs, friendships, homes, opportunities, and sometimes hope. And none of it goes on the balance sheet.

Essentially, we all subsidize their business success. They move on to more profitable states, countries or business models and we mop up the mess or live with the consequences. We're all the FDIC. We're not their adversaries, we're their unwitting partners.

It's about time those misguided, arrogant, insulated, Rand-ian mother****ers in the boardrooms showed us some respect. When we ask for regulations, it's not because we're jealous or uneducated or communist, it's because we have a stake in the business.

Edited on Mon May-31-10 05:45 PM by AsahinaKimi
Only honorable Samurai (meaning to serve) would commit Seppuku. It was a way to get their respect back. This man seems to have no honor.

In Ancient Japan, he would simply be used as a target to test out a new blade's cut ability.

219. The workers on the rig that are dead would want their life back and these guys would too!
so would their families!

where is our government on this shit??????????

Deepwater Horizon survivors allege they were kept in seclusion after rig explosion, coerced into signing legal waivers

According to two surviving crew members of the Deepwater Horizon, oil workers from the rig were held in seclusion on the open water for up to two days after the April 20 explosion, while attorneys attempted to convince them to sign legal documents stating that they were unharmed by the incident. The men claim that they were forbidden from having any contact with concerned loved ones during that time, and were told they would not be able to go home until they signed the documents they were presented with.
Stephen Davis, a seven-year veteran of drilling-rig work from San Antonio, told The Guardian's Suzanne Goldenberg today that he was held on a boat for 36 to 40 hours after diving into the Gulf from the burning rig and swimming to safety. Once on a crew boat, Davis said, he and the others were denied access to satellite phones or radio to get in touch with their families, many of whom were frantic to find out whether or not they were OK.
Davis' attorney told Goldenberg that while on the boat, his client and the others were told to sign the statements presented to them by attorneys for Transocean — the firm that owned the Deepwater Horizon — or they wouldn't be allowed to go home. After being awake for 50 harrowing hours, Davis caved and signed the papers. He said most of the others did as well.
Davis' story seems to be backed up by a similar account given to NPRby another Deepwater Horizon crewmember earlier in the month. Christopher Choy, a roustabout on the rig, said that the lawyers gathered the survivors in the galley of a boat and said, "'You need to sign these. Nobody's getting off here until we get one from everybody.' ... At the bottom, it said something about, like, you know, this can be used as evidence in court and all that. I told them, 'I'm not signing it.' "
Choy said that once he was finally allowed to get off the boat, he was shuttled to a hotel, where he met up with his wife. At the hotel, representatives from Transocean confronted him again and badgered him to sign the statement. Exhausted, traumatized and desperate to go home, Choy said that he finally relented and signed.
Choy's lawyer, Steve Gordon, is incensed over what transpired in the hours after the explosion. He, along with other attorneys for Deepwater Horizon workers, is trying to get the documents voided by the courts.
"It's absurd. It's unacceptable, and it's irresponsible," Gordon told NPR.

246. It's easy to be a sociopath when the system is rigged so that pieces of shit like this asshole
don't have to ever worry about paying for the consequences of their actions.

Oh, sorry... I meant to say "arsehole" lord knows if there is a victim in all this is his highness CEO.

These people are sociopaths, we need to understand that they are not of the same human condition as 99% of the rest of people of our species. The sad part is that our whole existence and social systems have been developed in order to cater to these 1% of sociopaths. Truly a failure from our part.

I am getting sick that normal people who do silly mistakes have no mercy from our system, to the point their lives are irreparably damaged for what are minor offenses and which could have avoided if our society hadn't failed them. And yet the biggest transgressors get scott free...

Enough, how long are we going to tolerate this abuse?

249. The sad part is that he WILL get his life back.
He'll fade into obscurity with his golden parachute severance plan, legally distanced by miles and miles from whatever poor chump BP throws to the legal system as a sacrificial lamb. The people who won't ever get their lives back are the Gulf Coast residents whose livelihoods depend on fishing or tourism. Those folks' lives as they know them are over, and those industries may never come back in that part of the world.
