Please Post Your Ideas to Stop The Oil Gusher Here
Even if you're not a scientist or expert. I got the idea from this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x8446976

I don't have an idea yet. Give me time.

2. If you want to check your idea first, go here
Go to the site below and do a search to check first to see if your idea has already been discussed, and if it has, the reasons why it might not be viable. These people know what they're talking about.

5. That's right.
I just posted this as a reply in a sunken thread. I think Thad should be getting his info from there as well.

Thad needs to assign any Coast Guard member capable of accessing those newfangled Internets tubes to monitor the conversation over at http://www.theoildrum.com/node/6524, and report back to him what the fucking roughnecks and petro-engineers are concluding. (as they sit hyp-mo-tized, watching the ROVs, just like all the rest of us).

If the Thadster did that, then he would have a real good idea of what's really happening down there. The oil boys on that site have been right on the money so far. They do this shit for a living, unlike the BP PR guys in touch with Thad.

3. I'm afraid my suggestion is the end-all to end-all
I say strike a match and watch it burn. Of course, I would want to get all living beings out of there first, but whether a firestorm would work or not, I don't know, and frankly, there are very few other suggestions which are feasible, workable, or cost-effective. We're going to be cleaning up this mess for many years to come.

23. vast
The vast majority of the oil is still far far below the surface.

I doubt that would burn

27. Evidently, my idea was sound
to a degree. I went over to the Oildrum site and checked it after I wrote it, and they've already done some burns on the surface oil.

I think perhaps we should get all the assholes who have been calling for continued off shore drilling, who have a stake in the oil business and who have continually put their greed above the environment, as well as everyone from Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, and any other pissant bastards who have somehow in a weirdo bizarro world blamed this on Obama, put workclothes on their backs and shove them into the water to clean up the mess.

Either that, or, if the truth about witches sinking bears any fruit, we can put them down into the hole and plug it with all the hot air they're creating.

4. Plug it with oil executives. It's 5 tons of pressure pure square inch down there.
That should work better than a guillotine. It won't stop the leak, but it may stop future leaks.

22. Conical plug with position based on rank.
If you start with the top execs and slowly work down, by the time you get to the bottom the techs will be really inspired to find something that works, AND they won't have upper management on their backs. First the carrot, then the stick. I bet they produce.

6. Shoot it full of tampons
The way just one tampon stops up the standpipe under the toilet when it gets flushed, I have to wonder what shooting a crapload down this hole would do?

8. A semipermeable sock, idea courtesy of someone at Kos,
modeled and rendered (by me) in Blender:

The sock is moored to the ocean floor, and the rings are buoyant, also moored to the floor. As the oil gushes upward, ships on the surface can siphon it off.

*what material do you use to keep the oil from leaking through the sock (to the greatest extent possible)?

*That's a LOT of material.

13. Has anyone compared the gusher to a major arterial blood vessel?
An catheter that is inserted into an arterial vessel is a bit like taking the oil pipeline and puncturing into it at a more proximal end. The newly inserted line will eventually be "capped" by a luer locking mechanism (similar to a lid that screws onto a jar).

This is the best picture I can find to show you what the new catheter would look like (although it's not capped).

Well, you asked, and this is the closest type of analysis and trouble shooting based on "my world" that relates to what is going on in the gulf.

This is a good exercise. I'm glad you brought this topic to an OP.

14. Use smaller pipes
Edited on Sat May-29-10 10:18 PM by GreatCaesarsGhost
use a smaller (diameter) tight fitting pipe and shove it into the bigger pipe.
then shove a smaller into that and so on.

and when it's small enough, cap it.

21. (How to stop the oil gusher)
My idea is to make a band with built in clamps to fit around the pipe. Since the pipe has tremendous pressure, put the band on next to the hole. Then slide the band over the hole, clamp it down, and that should solve the problem.

25. I'm no expert, but I think Rush, Glenn and Sean Hannity would all fit
nicely into those holes and have the girth to stop the leakage with their HUGH blowholes! They combined should be able to SUCK up all the oil and have room to spare!
