Since defenders of the current policy seem to be so obsessed with unit cohesion and morale if "teh gays" are allowed to serve.
Now I am convinced that the large majority of active duty personnel would be just fine with repealing DADT, but for those that are still homophobic, make it so the new policy would encourage soldiers, Marines, airmen, seamen, etc. to end their enlistments/commissions if they so strongly object to serving with openly gay men and women. In other words, let them be discharged if that is what they want. But their discharge papers would say explicitly that they left the military because they could not serve alongside fellow troops who are gay. Then they can explain that to future employers when that notation comes up on the background check.
And then you will have gotten rid of the small minority of homophobic haters in the armed forces too. Although, I will reiterate that all evidence suggest that most active duty people would not object to a policy change.
