Holding my breath. I have family in NOLA, am worried sick about them. They're expecting their first child in Oct.

Sure hope this works! Don't think the Gulf can survive until Aug.

24. Just from watching MSNBC - the process may not be like shutting off a faucet.
As top-kill proceeds, we may see everything from the gusher going and stopping, or temporarily increasing in flow rate - the process is not simple, and it might take a couple days for things to settle out.

the gushing pipe will show changes from more to less flow they have warned.

It is a bad sign if it stops completely I believe.

Or that the flow stopped there because a new leak formed somewhere else.

15. So The Live Cam Is Only Showing The Oil Spewing From The Pipe.......
Unlike last night - BP is not showing on the live camera of what is going on down on the ocean floor. Last night BP was streaming a lot of preparation work that was being done to get ready for this procedure and it was compelling video. One was able to see the robotic arms doing that work. Really cool. Today - they only have the camera fixed on the spewing oil - looks like they don't want us to see what they are actually doing down there.

Here's the link to the live feed from BP: http://www.bp.com/liveassets/bp_internet/globalbp/globalbp_uk_english/homepage/STAGING/local_assets/bp_homepage/html/rov_stream.html

34. "Top Kill" is a standard strategy. Problem is, doesn't always work.
Only sure way is to drill the relief wells. Problem is, sometimes it takes 7 trys on those.

The surest way is to not have the spill in the first place by having heavily regulated, reviewed and inspected operations. Or, not drilling at all if the risk cannot be reduced to near nonexistent.

But in the privatized Libertarian paradise we live in, where regulation is the 'market' punishing 'bad actors', this is what we are left with.

19. Top-kill is a go.
Hopefully, all the oil-geeks did their homework, got all the tests and measurements required, ran the computer simulations, and will get it right this time.

They've had a month to put this together, so I'll give my revised Mythbusters odds, pulled straight out of my Gut of Truthiness...

50% chance of success.
40% chance that something goes wrong and they abort.
10% chance that something goes horribly wrong, say the BOP ruptures, and they make the problem worse.

Cross your fingers...

CNBC was saying that BP indicated they will be slowly ramping up pressure and even if successful it may take as long as 24-48 hours before flow stops.

We have had 24/7 coverage here in southeast Louisiana for the past month. Today it has reached a head, and I need to take a break. I sat here watching the live feed sobbing. I feel so broken. I feel this top kill is our last chance and if this doesn't work, we will have to make important decisions regarding whether we stay here or give up and move.

We have been on a roller coaster. Immediately following the explosion we were told the oil was minimal. Fourty eight hours later we knew that was a lie but they have had solution after solution after solution. In the mean time, I interviewed for a job after being unemployed for almost a year, but was told that they are going to put the position on hold until we find out what is going to happen to our area. And I heard a beekeeper talking today about his bees acting crazy, swarming more than usual. I can't take any more.

65. CNN seems to have better coverage of the procedure
For one thing, they have ALL the camera feeds from BP, not just the one that is being sent out to most media outlets. Rick Sanchez is fascinated and keeping an eye on the various shots.

This will take at least ten hours to get the pipe blocked. Then an additional day or two to keep pumping in the stuff to make sure the plug holds. The figures given were one barrel of material for each foot of casing; a thousand feet must be filled to stop the leakage; thousands more to make sure. One barrel pumped per minute. So 1000 minutes to stop it = ten hours. At least two days to pump enough to make certain.
