"Oil spills into pipeline containment area"
The trans-Alaska oil pipeline is shut down after as much as several thousand barrels of oil overflowed a storage tank at Pump Station 9 near Delta Junction, state and pipeline officials said today.

No oil escaped a lined containment area around at the pump station, said Becky Spiegel with the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The department is investigating the spill.

The spill occurred during a planned shutdown of the pipeline and testing of the fire-command system this morning.

A power failure caused a valve to open, which led to the spill.
