6. Good question.
I think it's in response to a request by Arizona, but don't want to state that as fact. CNN is working on the story now. He's also asking Congress for mega money to fund the operation.

22. Re-starting Bush admin program.
Edited on Tue May-25-10 02:17 PM by redqueen
In 2006, President George W. Bush sent thousands of troops to the border to perform support duties that tie up immigration agents. The troops wouldn't perform significant law enforcement duties.

That program has since ended, and politicians in border states have called for troops to be sent there to curb human and drug smuggling and prevent Mexico's drug violence from spilling over into the United States.

142. To the Arizona-Mexico border
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and a bipartisan group of border state lawmakers in Congress have been urging Obama to send in National Guard troops to respond to the high-profile violence along the U.S.-Mexico border. More than 20,000 Mexicans have died in drug-related violence, and Arizona law enforcement
officials have complained of increased home-invasion robberies and other crime in the state's border towns.

He hasn't done quite "everything", but it looks like he's getting there, in fact he might go to the territories previously considered unavailable - but not uncharted, and very much coveted by the RW for a long time.

Perhaps it will take a Democratic admin to fulfill the RW's long-standing objectives (such as dismantling social safety network and going back to the depravities of the out-of-control capitalism).

154. Also on NYT now:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/26/us/26border.html

President Obama will send up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the Southwest border and seek increased spending on law enforcement there to combat drug smuggling after demands from Republican and Democratic lawmakers that border security be tightened.

The decision was disclosed by a Democratic lawmaker and confirmed by administration officials after Mr. Obama met on Tuesday with Republican senators, several of whom have demanded that troops be placed at the border. The lawmakers learned of the plan after the meeting.

But the move also reflected political pressure in the president’s own party with midterm election campaigns under way and with what is expected to be a tumultuous debate on overhauling immigration law coming up on Capitol Hill.

...

Democrats and Republicans who agreed with the move rushed to take credit for it, including Ms. Brewer, who said her signing of the new Arizona law had pushed the administration.

“I am pleased that President Obama has now, apparently, agreed that our nation must secure the border to address rampant border violence and illegal immigration without other preconditions, such as passage of ‘comprehensive immigration reform,’ ” she said.

This is total validation of Brewer and that odious law in Arizona. Unbelievable.

44. AP story quoting Rep Giffords
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4397664

PHOENIX -- The Obama administration plans to announce Tuesday that it will send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to improve border security, an Arizona congresswoman said.

Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords also said in a statement released Tuesday that President Barack Obama will request $500 million in funding for border security.

Part of Giffords' district borders Mexico.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's spokesman said the governor hadn't been told of the move prior to her office being contacted by The Associated Press and had no immediate comment.

In 2006, President George W. Bush sent thousands of troops to the border to perform support duties that tie up immigration agents. The troops wouldn't perform significant law enforcement duties.

A PR move that has no operational value

Plus, this validates Brewer -- who is actually facing the economic fallout of immigrants LEAVING Arizona, not coming in.

84. I agree with your points that is a bad move

I also know that neither the National Guard nor the Border Patrol wants untrained uncoordinated armed people wandering around discharging their weapons.

As in the past it will:

In 2006, President George W. Bush sent thousands of troops to the border to perform support duties that tie up immigration agents. The troops wouldn't perform significant law enforcement duties.

To actually deploy troops with live ammunition would require, among other things, rules of engagement and they are not going to have troops who have not been trained in law enforcement engaging suspects.

Your right that it is a bad move, but they will not be operationally engaged, something that the Pentagon itself would be 100% opposed to.

The border's total length is 3169 km (1969 miles) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico_%E2%80%93_United_States_border)

What is "less than one troop per mile" going to accomplish (other than caving in to right wing lunatics)?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37340747/ns/us_news-security/

In 2006, President George W. Bush sent thousands of troops to the border to perform support duties that tie up immigration agents. The troops wouldn't perform significant law enforcement duties.

That program has since ended, and politicians in border states have called for troops to be sent there to curb human and drug smuggling and prevent Mexico's drug violence from spilling over into the United States.

Roger Barnett, 64, began rounding up illegal immigrants in 1998 and turning them over to the U.S. Border Patrol, he said, after they destroyed his property, killed his calves and broke into his home.

His Cross Rail Ranch near Douglas, Ariz., is known by federal and county law enforcement authorities as "the avenue of choice" for immigrants seeking to enter the United States illegally."

106. Crime is DOWN in Arizona, or Anecdotes vs. Statistics
http://mediamatters.org/research/201004290029

From the link above:

Crime rates in Arizona at lowest point in decades. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), the violent crime rate in Arizona was lower in 2006, 2007, and 2008 -- the most recent year from which data are available -- than any year since 1983. The property crime rate in Arizona was lower in 2006, 2007, and 2008 than any year since 1968. In addition, in Arizona, the violent crime rate dropped from 577.9 per 100,000 population in 1998 to 447 per 100,000 population in 2008; the property crime rate dropped from 5,997 to 4,291 during the same period. During the same decade, Arizona's undocumented immigrant population grew rapidly. The Arizona Republic reported: "Between January 2000 and January 2008, Arizona's undocumented population grew 70 percent, according to the DHS report. Nationally, it grew 37 percent."

Crime rates have dropped during past decade in other border states. The BJS data further show that violent crime rates and property crime rates in California, New Mexico, and Texas dropped from 1998 through 2008 -- the most recent year from which data are available:

•In California, the violent crime rate dropped from 703.7 in 1998 to 503.8 in 2008; the property crime rate dropped from 3,639.1 to 2,940.3 during the same period.
•In New Mexico, the violent crime rate dropped from 961.4 in 1998 to 649.9 in 2008; the property crime rate dropped from 5,757.7 to 3,909.2 over the same period.
•In Texas, the violent crime rate dropped from 564.6 in 1998 to 507.9 in 2008; the property crime rate dropped from 4,547 to 3,985.6 over the same period.
Cato's Griswold: "t is a smear to blame low-skilled immigrant workers from Latin America for creating a crime problem in Arizona." In an April 27 post, Daniel Griswold, director of the Cato Institute's Center for Trade Policy Studies, wrote that "Arizona's harsh new law against illegal immigration is being justified in part as a measure to combat crime" and that "drug-related violence along the border is a real problem." But, Griswold continued, "it is a smear to blame low-skilled immigrant workers from Latin America for creating a crime problem in Arizona." From Griswold's post:

Arizona's harsh new law against illegal immigration is being justified in part as a measure to combat crime. The murder of an Arizona rancher in March, allegedly by somebody in the country without documentation, galvanized support for the bill.

The death of the rancher was a tragedy, and drug-related violence along the border is a real problem, but it is a smear to blame low-skilled immigrant workers from Latin America for creating a crime problem in Arizona.

The crime rate in Arizona in 2008 was the lowest it has been in four decades. In the past decade, as the number of illegal immigrants in the state grew rapidly, the violent crime rate dropped by 23 percent, the property crime rate by 28 percent.

112. LOL! I knew that @sshole's name was familiar. This is your hero, right here:
Arizona Vigilante Roger Barnett Found Liable
February 19th, 2009

Earlier this week our friends at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) reported that an Arizona jury found Roger Barnett, a vigilante rancher on the border between Arizona and Mexico, liable for assaulting and intentionally inflicting emotional distress on a group of immigrants he found on public land. Barnett, armed with a gun and a dog, held several women at gunpoint, kicking one of the unarmed women and threatening to shoot or have his dog attack anyone who tried to leave. The women plaintiffs were awarded $73,352 in damages.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that Barnett has done this. Barnett has a history of racial assault. In 2004, he held the Morales family at gunpoint, this time armed with a semi-automatic military-style assault rifle. Yelling racial slurs, Barnett threatened to kill them. The family and the friend accompanying them on their hunting trip were all U.S. citizens. In September 2008, they were awarded close to $100,000 in damages by the Arizona Supreme Court.

While we are encouraged that Barnett has had to pay a price for his predilection for racial assaults, one has to wonder how much money Barnett is willing to spend before he stops and how many similar attacks have gone unreported.

Read the full text of MALDEF's press release below.

125. Progressive Caucus: Minimize the militarization of our border communities
http://cpc.grijalva.house.gov/index.cfm?ContentID=205&ParentID=0&SectionID=93&SectionTree=93&lnk=b&ItemID=203

Border Security and Law Enforcement
• Uphold the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in immigration laws.
• Minimize the militarization of our border communities and respects local residents that live along the border.
• Oppose the use of state and local police for immigration law enforcement.
• Ensure immigration enforcement is humane and does not violate the human rights of our communities or tear families apart.
• Oppose ICE raids that unfairly target particular ethnic groups, violate basic due process principles, and negatively impact U.S. citizen children.

136. Hyper-dimensional political chess
It's a shame that people here can't understand that concept.

141. That's what the far right has been saying we should do for years.
Edited on Tue May-25-10 07:17 PM by Dr Fate
Those crazy, far left hippies say that if we target the employers who hire them with massive fines, we could shut down most illegal immigration in a reasonable time.

BUt our clear eyed conservati-err, I mean "centrist" DEMS know better- and so does the Chamber of Commerce!

LOL! What do those far-lefts know? They get everything wrong. Just look at how they opoposed Bush & the Iraq war, for instance.

Those idiots have even wasted the past 40 years by constantly suggesting that we research & fund alternate energy.

LOL! Those, silly, silly far lefts. Thank god our conservat...er, I mean "centrist" DEMS know that Rush is right!

152. This? THIS is the fucking issue he decides to be decisive on?
Oh right, it's poor people who need to be "dealt with," not billionaires. Gotcha.

This guy will not get another vote from me, period.

156. Nor I.
I held my nose the first time. Even if they ran Palin, I wouldn't vote for Obama. Without his speechwriters, he's got all the charisma of a weather balloon that always floats center-right. I'm voting for a leftwing candidate next time. I don't care what party and I don't care what chances he or she has. I'm not voting for war-accelerating, immigration-bashing, corporate pandering, Vatican-pedophile enabling, LGBT back-stabbing, mountain top-removing, American-abroad assassinating, secretive, health-insurance mandating, Goldman Sachs cabinet-having candidates anymore. If I'm going to suffer under right-wing politicians, let them at least be honest about their affiliations. Let's at least have things properly defined.
