Just learned my former sister in law has died. She had cirrhosis. We had thought she was doing well
after being released from the hospital since she had stopped drinking and was getting help on her diet. I was worried that she went back home with her partner who also had a drinking problem and she probably should have been put in a rehab facility. That was only a few months ago. Hoping to learn more but am just in shock...still don't know the exact cause of death...

1. Just lost our brother-in-law to cirrhosis too, with lung cancer in January.
I understand how you feel.

4. I wonder if she could have had a sudden heart attack or stroke.
I thought dying of cirrhosis was a somewhat long drawn out process, or at least that's what happened to the wife of a friend of mine...

3. I'm very sorry, CTyankee.
My own Grandfather died of the same thing. He drank off and on for 40 years. He died before I was even born, because of it.

5. I'm so sorry
I lost a family member to cirrhosis about 7 years ago, hers was idiopathic and we never found out what the cause of death was either. Again, I am so sorry for your loss.

14. Thank you. I feel so bad that I hadn't known of her illness until a few months ago.
I was hoping to see her at a family wedding last July in NYC but was just told by her daughter, my neice, that she couldn't "handle" New York and I thought that was odd. I'm wondering if her kids just didn't want to reveal her illness. Funny, because two of her kids are social workers...

I think for some people it's a form of a tic, one of those odd, inexplicable sudden movements...or maybe someone has a deep philosophical reason that escapes you and me...you'd think they wouldn't bother...

16. You're sweet. I'm just full of memories now of earlier days.
Our daughters are only 6 weeks apart in age. We had both had sons as firstborns, too. The cousins had spent several weeks each summer together with their grandparents and we often visited together as well. We watched the riot at the 1968 Democratic convention as it unfolded on TV...it seems like just yesterday...

15. Oh god....
I'm so sorry.

:(

I'm also scared.

My younger brother, who just turned 40, has been in the hospital at least five times since last winter. He nearly died twice - was almost comatose - I read that 80% of people with liver failure die when they go into a coma.

He's doing pretty well right now, but the doctor has still given him only 50% chance of living another 5 years, even if he never drinks again and follows his meds and diet program.

His father (who is not my father) died at the age of 44 from complications of alcoholism. My mother's mom died at the age of 33 from alcoholism.

My condolences to the family

17. My brother might also have died from cirrhosis if it weren't for his
final, fatal stroke (his third). He had stopped drinking and was in a nursing home but had continued to smoke...

What a terrible visitation upon your family. I have often wondered if alcoholism isn't more genetic than we think...

21. I'm sorry she's passed.
No matter what the cause of her death, I know how painful it is to see someone suffer from alcoholism. To see them beat it but then still suffer the effects of years of abuse is extra painful.
