Mothers of 3 Jailed US Hikers in Iran on Visiting Their Children and Continuing the Fight for Their
Edited on Tue May-25-10 11:12 AM by EFerrari
The mothers of the three American hikers jailed in Iran have returned to the United States after seeing their imprisoned children for the first time in ten months. Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal were detained in July after straying across Iran’s border during a hiking trip in northern Iraq. The mothers of the three jailed hikers—Cindy Hickey, Nora Shourd, and Laura Fattal—join us to discuss their visit with their children and their continued fight for their release.

AMY GOODMAN: The mothers of the three American hikers jailed in Iran returned to the United States Saturday after seeing their imprisoned children for the first time in ten months. Shane Bauer, twenty-seven, Sarah Shourd, thirty-one, and Josh Fattal, twenty-seven, were detained in July after straying across Iran’s border during a hiking trip in northern Iraq. Their mothers arrived in Tehran last week after the Iranian government OKed their visas.

On Sunday, Iran’s intelligence minister said the three jailed Americans are spies but suggested his country would be open to a prisoner swap for Iranians being held in US custody. The US told Politico such a swap is out of the question, but it’s willing to provide consular access and answer any concerns Iran has about Iranians in US custody.

Last week, in their first public appearance since their detention, the three jailed hikers discussed their ten-month prison ordeal. Sarah Shourd said she spends most of her days in solitude.

1. Hikers, huh?
Sorry, but their story has always seemd preposterous to me. Evenso, if they were just "hikers", they should be handed the Darwin Award for the most idiotic hikers ever to strike a boot.

6. Do you know that as a fact?
Try getting into Mexico without a visa and /or passport. From the northern or southern borders. See how long you will spend in jail there!

8. I'm with ya
This story has been fishy from the get-go. Hiking? In Iraq? Seriously? While there is an active war?

Either they are seriously stupid/ignorant or they are spies.

15. Right. They were in Iran.
After having "accidentally" crossed the border while "hiking" in northern Iraq.

14. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has thought this.....
and they keep referring to them as kids or children (I know to the Mothers they will always be their children no matter what age) but I've heard them called that by the media too. C'mon, they are like 30. They are not "kids" or "children"

16. They are called kids in relation to their main advocates
which are their mothers. None of them is married yet. And there is no active war in IRAN.

17. "None of them is married yet."
Is that a sign of maturity?

18. No, it just means that their mothers appear in news stories,
not their partners.

20. Right. Their moms are going to be in every story
because they are the ones who have moblized. That's why you see "kids" and "children" so much. No one is claiming they are literally children.
