I'm furious, angry and blown away by this UTTER INCOMPETENCE going on!! I actually went to the Gulf of Mexico yesterday and right now it looks great! FELT a need to see it now before it goes down! Heard some people say THEY don't think it's going to affect us here, south of Tampa Bay!

I HAD TO WALK AWAY! What do you say when someone says something like that! Maybe we wont' be seeing what we are seeing in LA right now... BUT THERE IS NOT DOUBT in my mind that WE ARE going to be affected! There are barriers we put up every year to protect our turtles who are just now nesting! I asked the question of my companion "do th MaMa turtles walk away" when their nests become overwhelmed with GOO?? And that's on the BEGINNING of my long list of questions!!!

For those of us who have lived here most of our lives this is horrendous beyond words! I'm sure it sounds like I don't care about the rest of the country, but I DO! It's just that for those of us who may soon actually "see" this destruction it's beyond HURT!

I have more words and anger within me and it would take much too long to give my true explanation and description of what I really feel within me!

And Obama says... "Plug the Damn Hole" and goes off to a FUND RAISER tonight for Barbara Boxer! So, okay go to CA... BP is doing a great job, it's OKAY!

Me? I would be rounding up EVERY POSSIBLE resource, whether any ONE sector has the real solution or not! You know, that TWO HEADS ARE BETTER THAN ONE THING!!

Three weeks ago has various charts about the currents.

If the oil makes its way around to the east side of Florida, it could go straight up the coast line, depending on what is going on with the major weather systems and the currents.

(And no one seems to have a clue about our weather this year - the volcano has totally changed the weather for most of us. We are finishing up with yet another week of rain in Northern California. Personally I love it - but this is an extremely rare event, an anomaly - a week's worth of rain in late May.)

Fingers are crossed that someone, anyone, figures this out. Kevin Costner, James Cameron, I don't care who does it, I just hope that the Gulf can be pulled out of this catastrophe somehow.

However, I have discussed this with a colleague who is on call to do sampling, but he says the air is too toxic right now to do what we do without the proper support and gear. I am not going to risk my health (see Exxon Valdez aftermath).

We just have to wait until the gusher is plugged until many of us can move into the area. One of my former civil engineer professors is working with Lisa Jackson, so I'll try to get info from her later in the week or next week.

We will be cleaning up for the next ten years, at least, or until a hurricane wipes us out (we are going to lose our wetlands and thus our protection). I'll likely stay in New Orleans to work on air quality monitoring, which is part of what I do now (urban climate).

I'm okay for now. There's going to be a lot of people in need in the near future, as I fear this mess will travel to other shores. Perhaps we can set up a fund drive for specific organizations that are working to repair the wetlands.... we just have to wait and see, until this tragedy completely unfolds. I thought Katrina was bad (and every other tropical cyclone I survived), but this is much worse, for ALL of us.

A Louisiana woman is suing Wal-Mart over an incident where a nutria, affectionately named "Norman" by store employees, "came from behind the Coke rack" and scared the shit out of her.

As first reported by the Abbeville Meridional...

According to the lawsuit, Rebecca (White) was in the grocery aisle shopping on Oct. 11, 2008. Her basket was full of food when suddenly and without warning, a large nutria came from behind the Coke rack and ran straight towards Rebecca, the lawsuit said.

Rebecca, fearing for her safety, pulled the shopping cart towards her to protect her from the nutria and as she did, the cart rolled over her left foot causing her to stumble and causing her to suffer an injury.

That's where I'm from, that's where all my family - and in-laws - still are. I may have lived in Colorado for over 40 years and started our branch of the family here, but New Orleans is still "home." Just flew down there in March to say good-bye to my mother before she died, then buried her there, with my father. Rushed back to my beloved mountains and arrived 10 minutes before the birth of my first grandchild (which I witnessed after a mad run into the delivery room!).

After Katrina, this oil spill is a catastrophe of cosmic proportions. Help has got to come from SOMEWHERE: Private individuals, private business, our own government, or some other. The food chain is in danger, and the rest of the world recognizes the global significance of this event.
