HuffPo: Spanish Bullfighter Julio Aparicio Gored In Throat During Bullfight (GRAPHIC WARNING)
Julio Aparicio Gored In Throat During Bullfight

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/05/22/julio-aparicio-gored-in-t_n_585941.html

Julio Aparicio, one of Spain's most famous matadors, was gored in the throat today during a bullfight. The horrific injury has left him in critical condition:

"The horn went though the tongue and penetrated the roof of the mouth, fracturing the jawbone," one of the medics who worked on Aparicio told AFP news in Madrid.

The incident took place during the Festival of Saint Isidro, considered to be the most important event in the bullfighting calendar, at the Plaza de Toros las Ventas bullring, which can seat up to 24,000 people.

Scroll down for photos and video of the goring. WARNING: they are not for the faint of heart.

33. I went to a bull fight when traveling
in Spain. It was horrid. First, the bull already has a long piece of steel shoved down between its shoulder blades with a red ribbon flying in the wind at the end of it. So the bull is already bleeding before the 'show' even starts. Then all of these others come out and torture it...guys with long sticks, then guys on horses with long spears. Then finally this silly caped dude.

Finally when the poor bull is bleeding, and cross-eyed, and limping this caped dude is supposed to take his long sword and with one blow, kill the bull....I mean immediately put the bull out of its misery. The sword has to be leveled at a precise place on the bull. So if this caped dude isn't a decent shot, he has to keep this little 'sword dance' going on and on....and the crowd starts to hiss. It's just horrid.

I won't go back to Spain. I won't go to Mexico. I'm sure those countries couldn't care less.

That caped dude must have had some really bad Karma coming his way.

11. This story has raised my consciousness in a serious way.

It is sickening to think that this sport goes on - that the bull is injured in advance of the fight (that's why it's bloody) & that human beings actually pay to watch this horror. I'm going to donate as much as I can afford, volunteer, do whatever I can to help end this "sport"

a wake up call, to me at least.

22. I had a dual reaction...
...one, that grown men still participate in this "sport," which is no better than cockfighting or Michael Vick's "Bad Newz Kennels," and two, that people still enjoy watching this "sport."

It's a sick world. I'm not going to point the finger specifically at any one culture, because as I said, Spain's got bullfighting, America's got Vick (although bullfighting is a legal "sport" in Spain, while dog fighting isn't legal here).

Sick is sick, that's it. It's not dependent on borders or nationalities or genders or religions or any other "category."

It's a sick fucking world, and we have the choice of becoming sick with it or rising above it. You can tell how I feel about the people in that photo watching from the stands. They make ti possible for this man to collect a paycheck for doing what he does...or perhaps "did."

20. good for the bull.
I have had a full grown, 2,000 pound bull with ring in nose in my pasture. He had no liking for me and as a result I have no love for bulls.

However, my parents forced me to watch a bull (really they are calves) be tortured to death in Spain. Lucky me: we also got to tour behind the scenes. Here is the inside scoop, as I remember it from about ~42 years ago:

* The bulls are really just babies. They aren't allowed to play at pasture -- they might gain muscle mass, endurance and fighting skills.

* The sound of the horses screaming in terror upset the tourists, so the Spanish fix that little problem by cutting their vocal cords.

* The calf was tortured for about half an hour, running around the arena confused, terrified, continuously crying out in agony.

* the "bullfighter" came out after the calf had been bled significantly...he was blinded by his own blood splashed all over his face, staggering and stumbling by then.

* the "bullfighter" failed to kill him until he'd stabbed him fully 3 times.

Just another little episode for which I will never forgive my parents. x(

35. OMG....I had
no idea about the horse's vocal cords. I remember them wearing blinders.

It's a macho culture and I am not visiting it again. And don't drink the red wine either....got sicker than hell and ended up in the hospital, which was FREE, however. Got a shot of something that sent me to heaven and back.

42. not blinders...blindfolds
I forgot that little detail. Blinders keep them from seeing things lurking behind them (the position of their eyes means they can see almost, but not quite, all the way behind. It can be frightening/startling for a nervous type horse pulling a carriage, or in a race getting distracted.

Blindfolded, they are completely blind to what's happening. But of course they hear, they smell the blood, and animals communicate in other ways too, I suspect.

51. I'm
thoroughly disgusted. Who in the hell thinks this crap up? A bunch of boyz with time on their hands sitting around drunk thinking up horrific ways to torture animals and yet seem so macho.

That picture of the matador with the horn thru his mouth...Karma.

I grew up on a farm and we had one bull. It scared the hell out of me. It was kept in this terribly small double-secured pen. I actually felt sorry for him. I guess he was let out to go have sex. He was huge.

The steers...even after castrated were little shits and would stampede me. I'd end up in a tree. They thought this was very funny...as did my grandfather.

28. Bonobo wonders...
Where were all of you "critics" of blood sports on the threads celebrating the wonders of the "Finger of Death" (military artillery piece) or the relative merits of this rifle over this rifle in Afghanistan.

Bonobo would like to REMIND you that those weapons are just advance ways to stick holes in humans so their blood pours out and that they kill lots of good, innocent human beings and their loved ones.

Bonobo thinks the hypocrisy exhibited by you people who would bemoan the death and torture of a bull at the hands of a bullfighter is a really, really good indication of how fucked up American society is -because you are actually blind to how blithely you accept the murderous actions of the U.S.A. that happen EVERY day.

Do you understand we KILL people en masse with drone aircraft? EVERY DAY?

This thread is just more violence porn, but you love it because it allows you to enjoy the porn AND feel like good Progressives at the same time.

Get a fucking clue, you all.

"Violence? Your soaking in it"

40. And while I agree with it also...
there's the matter of empathy overload that people can't seem to handle.

Like when we heard how many people died during Hurricane Katrina, for example.

For some reason, and I don't know if I'm the only one, but that's the way it is...for some reason, a multitude of deaths is easier to deal with than hearing...or seeing...the story of ONE death. Or ONE torture.

Large numbers have a way of seeming impersonal, whereas the one or two individuals do not.

So, again, giving Katrina as an example, the large numbers didn't seem to hit as hard as hearing someone give personal details on one individual. When the storm had ended and people were talking about this or that loved one, I couldn't handle it.

I don't know if I've explained it so that it's understandable, but it's not always a matter of hypocrisy. Sometimes it's merely a matter of what someone is able to handle or feel personal connection with. Not exactly a moral failing, IMO.

45. You did a good job explaining it, and I think you are right,
I don't really think the people I described lack compassion.

But sometimes, they need reminders of the proper proportion. Don't you think?

Someone needs to give a pinch once in awhile.

I am also guilty of the same thing you describe, so I shouldn't sound so holier-than-thou.

It just hit me when I opened this thread first thing in the morning.

Thanks.
