Defense implements sexual assault rule

Defense implements sexual assault rule

Companies that restrict victims of alleged sexual assault from pursuing legal action will not be eligible for future Defense Department contracts.

On Wednesday, the department published an interim rule in the Federal Register that implements a provision in the fiscal 2010 Defense Appropriations Act prohibiting Pentagon contractors from using mandatory arbitration agreements to settle many criminal complaints. The rule is effective immediately.

The provision, introduced by Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., stemmed from the experience of former KBR Inc. employee Jamie Leigh Jones, who was allegedly gang raped by co-workers while stationed in Iraq and then physically prevented from receiving medical treatment or reporting the crime.

Upon returning home, Jones learned that her contract with the company banned her from taking the case to court. Instead, it required her to enter into arbitration with the alleged rapists.

1. Good call. About freaking time. Why would a company even want to make it legal for
their employees to rape their female employees? What kind of sick thinking is that, anyway?

2. More to the point, Why should it even be possible
for a company to protect criminal behavior through a contract?

It is absurd.

4. And even more absurd is the giving of campaign contributions by
corporations as personhood to bribe politicians, and the inane supreme court we have supports it... No wonder corporations rule in this place loosely called a country. How can any politician be objective when bribed by a corporation... hell, they gave them the money in the first place to rule in their favor. What an idiotic system rigged against the majority of the citizens.

No wonder corporations think it's fine to protect criminal behavior through a contract... just another business dealing...

No wonder this place is so F'ed up.

3. It's time for many corporations to get a swift kick in the ass and the gov. to also
take over running the country again. We have far too much corporate arrogance and setting themselves above the law in this country.
