RI Rep. Introduces Immigration Bill Similar to AZ Law

State Representative Peter Palumbo (D-Dist. 16, Cranston) has introduced a new bill in the General Assembly that aims to crack down on illegal immigration in Rhode Island.

The "In Support of Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act" borrows heavily from the recently-enacted immigration laws in Arizona which have prompted some national outcry.

One provision of the bill states that if "reasonable suspicion exists" that a person is an illegal alien, the involved law enforcement agency must make a "reasonable attempt" to verify the person's immigration status with the federal government. Representative Palumbo tells ABC6 that immigration violations would still be considered a secondary offense, meaning that a person could not be stopped by law enforcement solely on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant.

3. That school where all the teachers were fired (and rehired last weekend)
has a high population of undocumented kids. They lost quite a few of them last year when a manufacturing plant in Mass was raided by ICE and the workers were deported. And the kids who left when their parents were deported were counted as dropouts. That spiked up the school's dropout rate and that was one reason it was considered a failing school.

That's all I know about the undocumented population in RI.

4. Rhode Island has a significant unemployment problem
I haven't checked lately, but in the near past, it even exceeded Michigan's rate. RI's jobs are heavily in the retail sector, those are all jobs that American citizens would do if offered them.

We're not talking picking lettuce here.
