Giuliani calls for adding 10 brigades to Army

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Playing to an audience steeped in military tradition, Rudolph Giuliani Saturday called for the U.S. Army to be expanded by at least 10 new combat brigades, or about 35,000 soldiers, to fight wars and terrorism around the world.

Giuliani, the Republican presidential front-runner, offered the massive expansion as he blasted the post-Cold War "peace dividend" that sharply reduced military forces, largely under the Clinton administration in the 1990s, as "one of our country's worst mistakes."

"I believe America needs at least 10 new combat brigades in addition to those already proposed by President Bush and are already in the budget," Giuliani said.

In a half-hour commencement address at the Citadel, the historic military college here, Giuliani stressed the need for a strong military and victory in Iraq, but never once mentioned his views on social issues.

2. YOY calls for slapping some sense into Rudy
I liked Chris Rock's comment about Rudy "He's kinda like a pit bull, he great when you have a burglar in your house, but you don't really want him around your kids."

To be dropped off at my front door tomorrow morning (don't worry about the cracks in the cement, I can afford to have 'em fixed).

Not to be optimistic or anything, but -- especially following last week's debate -- I can't see Giuliani's campaign surviving actual voters (primary or otherwise). Sleazy, slimy, smarmy, sadistic, just about any pejorative term beginning with an S naturally adheres to this creep.

I think it's going to be empty-suit Mitt that the Dem nominee has to face, and Mitt is eminently beatable.

8. Someone needs to tell Ghouliani that it was Clinton's military that prevailed early on in Iraq
and Afghanistan. It was Rummy and Bush who frittered away that military by asking it to do what it wasn't trained to do.

10. How are military recruiters meeting their goals now?
I know for a while, they had trouble meeting the requirements. Did Giuliani say where these new soldiers would come from?

12. You could not recruit 35,000 additional soldiers now with just financial incentives...
The cat is out of the bag. Those in the service are letting it be known how they were treated. Having promises broken regarding length of tours, and denial of healthcare benefits, families treated shabbily, and on constant rotation back to Iraq.

They already raised financial incentives so high that if money were the only factor keeping new recruits from signing up, they have already have signed up.

It will take another draft to add so many new recruits ON TOP OF replacing those who have been killed and injured(over 3400 and 24000 respectively).

And more troops requires more money to maintain them.

This is political posturing by Giuliani, and not grounded in reality.

14. Bingo
I'd love to see what the standards were in the early '90's compared to today for the different branches of the military. Pretty soon we'll be back to offering either jail or the military to make the numbers.

Man With Pot Given Choice: Jail or Military

Posted: November 17, 2004 at 12:38 p.m.

SALINAS, Calif. (AP) -- A Salinas man will have to choose between going to jail or joining the military as his punishment for possession of marijuana.

A judge surprised both the prosecution and defense yesterday when he told Brian Barr that he could avoid a jail term by enlisting in the military.

The 24-year-old Barr was charged with marijuana possession after shooting a would-be robber who had entered his apartment with two others.

Police say Barr sold marijuana from his home, and that the three men were searching for money and marijuana.

In giving Barr a choice of sentence, Monterey County Judge Robert Moody said that the shooting was justified.

15. the other trick is enlisting foreigners...
while on active duty i began to meet more and more foreign nationals who were serving, and gaining american citizenship along the way. great path to a better life for many...
when we came home form iraq, our homecoming ceremony included a citizenship ceremony for about 50 soldiers, with a crowd of 50,000 watching.
bueno?

18. "to fight wars and terrorism..."
What wars? Afghanistan? Iraq is an elective private invasion and as such unnecessary and undesirable.

Terrorists are "fought" the way the British did it with the five fertilizer bomb plotters: meticulous intelligence work and police action. Just like Kerry said.

Ten new brigades to clean the latrines and buff the floors?
