4 soldiers, reserve officer arrested on suspicion of looting from store in tornado-ravaged town

Associated Press

GREENSBURG, Kan. — Four soldiers and a reserve police officer were arrested today on suspicion of looting cigarettes and alcohol from a store in this tornado-ravaged town, state officials said.

The soldiers from Fort Riley Army base and reserve police officer had come to assist on their own and were not part of any official detachment, said Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the state's adjutant general.

"These were people who weren't supposed to be there," Bunting said.

Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for the adjutant general's office, said the five were arrested at a Dillon's supermarket and were being held at the Pratt County Jail without bond. They have not yet been charged.

Watson said there were in uniform so police allowed them to come and go freely despite a town curfew. Watson said the officer was from a central Kansas community, but she was not sure which town.

2. It's not easy to sink that low without training.

5. It's just hard to imagine some people can be like this.
And this is so low that it seem like one needs extra training in scuminess to do it.

6. Maybe I read that wrong but
it sort of sounds like you're saying that soldiers are trained to be scummy.

11. It's unnatural to be a person who hears someone has been devastated by a disaster
and hops in his vehicle and rives miles and miles and miles to get there and then starts trying to profit from their loss by stealing everything which isn't nailed down. Yup!

I haven't bought cigarettes for years, having stopped altogether, thank god, but I know when I bought cigarettes they were wildly expensive, a real insult when they also were so bad for your health!

Apparently these guys saw the chance to get unguarded free cigarettes a temptation too attractive to resist.

They drove from 50 miles west of Topeka, by the star,

to all the way down here, near the Oklahoma border:

They are NOT model citizens. You're right, this is NOT natural.

7. as a survivor of Hurricane Andrew, all I can say is: Shoot the scumbags!
These assholes deserve whatever happens to them. Turn them over to the townsfolk. People have lost virtually EVERYTHING they own and have worked for all their lives, and some dirtbags wanna come try to take what little they have left after a disaster. Open season on looters is the ONLY answer. That's what the Florida Highway Patrol, Metro-Dade Police, Homestead Police and Florida City Police told US to do. "If you have looters come around, shoot them then call us, we'll get out when we can to take the garbage off of your lawn" <<---Direct quote from law enforcement...

8. KICK!
It's amazing that this thread sunk. I guess no one wants to admit our police and military personnel are capable of acts like this?

10. Wow just wow, now will people understand simply because one wears
a uniform it does not mean they hold moral ground or can be trusted?
