SAVAGE - Workers at the Fabcon, Inc. plant in Savage voted Thursday morning to ratify a new contract offer that maintains their overtime pay, ending a six-week strike that began April 5 as the workers took a stand to preserve overtime pay for weekend work.
The 69 workers, members of Laborers Local 563, will return to their jobs Friday.

“The Laborers Union is so proud of these courageous members who stood out on the picket line for six weeks to prove to Fabcon that they were strong enough to say ‘no’ to the company’s demands,,” said Tim Mackey, business manager of Laborers Local 563. “This is a victory for the workers and the union.”

Workers voted 52-2 to go on strike April 5, rejecting a management proposal that would have cut their wages by an estimated 30 percent by eliminating a long-time pay differential for overtime work on the weekends.

The company routinely insisted workers report to work for the weekend on short notice.

“We didn’t mind working the weekends, as long as we were paid fairly,” said Bob Sticha, New Prague, who has worked at the plant since it opened in 1971.

2. Ok perhaps I am dense
or the article is not well written, but they are keeping their OT pay, RIGHT? That does not strike me as a defeat.

3. My fault I changed it to no instead of defeat

They defeated the employers request for the 30% pay cut was what I meant.

8. And the article was not well written
but that is my strunk and white coming out.

Oh and WOOT! This also reflects, not that folks get it, on a slightly better economic climate.

Support striking Laborers at Fabcon
7 May 2010
SAVAGE - A fund has been created to help members of Laborers Local 563 who have been on strike at Fabcon, Inc., for nearly a month.
Some 50 workers at the Fabcon manufacturing facility in Savage walked off the job April 5 rather than accept a company proposal to cut pay by 30 percent by eliminating overtime pay for weekend work.

“These brave workers are standing up to defend the weekend,” their union said. “What happens here will either maintain the area standard or be the first step in eroding this standard.”

Checks, payable to “Local 563 Fabcon Strike Fund” may be sent to:

Union Bank & Trust Company
Attn: Tracy
312 Central Ave SE
Minneapolis, MN 55414-1025

Supporters also are encouraged to join Fabcon workers every day on the picketline from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 6111 West Highway 13, Savage.
