NYT to charge for content in January: report

The New York Times Co.will abandon its free-content model and begin charging for online access to articles on its Web site early next year, Bill Keller, the newspaper's executive director, told a dinner reception Thursday evening, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. The newspaper company plans to begin charging for access in January, the report cited Keller as saying, marking the first time an executive from the company has pinpointed when the site would enact the user-pay strategy that was laid out early this year.

I understand the need for them to make money, to pay for their operations, but there has to be another method of doing so as this one simply does not work.
