Pope Benedict calls same-gender marriage "dangerous!...insidious!"
Edited on Thu May-13-10 09:18 PM by Bluebear

What's more dangerous, or insidious? Two committed people who want to enshrine their love in law? Or a Catholic Church full of priests who molest young boys?

Pope Benedict would like you to believe the former:

"Addressing a huge crowd at the shrine of Fatima at the climax of his four day visit to Portugal, the 83-year-old Pope said that same sex marriage and abortion were among the 'most insidious and dangerous challenges that today confront the common good.' He expressed his 'profound appreciation' for anti-abortion campaigners, who he praised for defending the right to life and the 'recovery of people wounded by the drama of abortion'."

10. Just like divorce used to be the most dangerous and insidious thing to the church
So much of the Catholic church's doomsday rhetoric about gay marriage reminds me of how they fiercely opposed divorces for centuries because of the bible calling it sinful, before finally being forced to give in to changing culture. Divorce used to be an excommunicationable offense, King Henry (the 4th I believe) was excommunicated for merely trying to have a divorce.

One of these days the church will be forced to give in on gay marriage to because of changing culture.

14. I left
the Catholic church decades ago. I never had a problem with the pastoral aspects of religion; it was all the dogma that seemed so irrelevant.

This is the kind of thing that just reinforces why I left. There are many things that are challenges to the common good. The fact that Benedict zeros in on same sex marriage and abortion over war, hunger, famine, and torture just nails it for me.

22. The church is so worried about the unborn children
yet once they are born they could care less. They are against abortion yet masturbation is a sin, taking birth control is a sin, having sex for fun is a sin, sex education is a sin. Everything is a sin to the church. Perhaps if they worked on educating people about sex, let them stop unwanted pregnancies there would be less abortions and then the abortion problem would be manageable

30. The Catholic Church has made itself a dangerous and insidious anachronism,
Edited on Fri May-14-10 01:27 AM by Beam Me Up
the remnants of an ancient civilization whose absence of morality is legion. Plenty of bluster about saving the unborn, among other things, but very little leadership in helping humanity find true peace. Of all the things that are "dangerous and insidious" in this world, the Pope directs our collective attention to same sex marriage and abortion? I, myself, barely a religious man at all, can easily think of several far more pressing moral concerns that have direct impact on the quality and sacredness of life. Oh, you know, illegal resource wars under pretexts of fighting terrorism, the institution of torture and rendition, the environmental costs of erecting a technological civilization on non-renewable resources, thus destroying this Earth we are here to husband and shepherd. Things like that and it is a very long list. So, either the Pope is a Dope and has no concept of what kind of true moral leadership is needed in the world today, or, more likely IMO, he is simply a coward. It would take a *very* strong and powerful Pope to acknowledge, identify and stand up against the true Evils of this world, He and the Church itself having long been one of them.

46. They are of the same mentality as the Tea-baggers.
I see that he made this pronouncement during his pilgrimage to Fatima. This is an example of mentality of the "faithful" in which they actually believe in miraculous cures. How can you expect someone who is so damn stupid that they believe such utter nonsense to be able to be logical.

I will believe in miracles when I see a person who has no legs instantly provided a healthy pair. Seems to me that it would be a snap for someone as powerful as their almighty God that made a man out some clay and a women from a piece of bone after creating an entire universe that is beyond comprehension. It is difficult for sane people to understand how supposedly intelligent beings could still be ruled by superstitious nonsense that a piece of bread is mysteriously transformed into the body of Christ yet it still looks like and tastes exactly the same as it did before this astounding transformation. So don't expect this pathetic fool to be anything other than a brainwashed dimwit.

48. heh, for some reason those "miracles" only happened in "the olden days"
things like burning talking bushes, a sea whose waters split down the middle, an ark big enough to contain one pair of every living creature on earth (yeah, like penguins and polar gears were within easy reach of anteaters, 3-toed sloths, and giraffes--kind of like in Swiss Family Robinson--and of course they had a pair of all the millions of insect species--and did they HAVE to bring fire ants, scorpions, cockroaches, and rattlesnakes? Was it hard getting the lions and grizzly bears onboard??--and of course, there was all the right kind of food for every animal, including more animals to feed the carnivores, and a greenhouse, I guess, to keep the plant-eaters happy for 40 days and nights--and no mess at all with elephant poop, monkey poop, donkey poop, raccoon poop, panda poop etc ad nauseum)--and those dinosaurs! were all these animals in separate cages, or did they just free-range on the decks of the boat and not terrorize the other animals or humans? so many questions!)

so how come people don't live 800 years NOW?

If the nazi pope really wanted to talk about something dangerous or insidious, or actually more like an evil cancer, he should be talking about priests and other church officials diddling kids and how the catholic church has been covering it up for decades, if not centuries.

53. It certainly has enormous potential to be abused
I tend to agree with what Barry Goldwater had to say on the subject:
However, on religious issues there can be little or no compromise.
There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious
beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than
Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme
being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's
behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are
growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with
wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following
their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups
on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a
loss of money or votes or both. I'm frankly sick and tired of the
political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if
I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.'
Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to
claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even
more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every
religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my
vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today:
I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their
moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.'
