Your tax dollars at work.

=====

President Barack Obama has asked Congress for at least $129m (£87m) in new emergency funding to cope with wide-ranging fallout from the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/environment/7717871/Gulf-of-Mexico-oil-spill-Barack-Obama-asks-Congress-for-129m-to-help-cleanup.html

=====

Nonetheless, as in a tale foretold, Congress is expected to vote later this month on $33 billion in further "war funding" to pay for sending 30,000 troops (plus "support" troops, etc.) to Afghanistan -- most of whom are already there or soon will be. In addition, an extra $2 billion is being requested for aid and "civilian" operations in Afghanistan (much of which may actually go to the Afghan military and police)

17. Oh, let's see, because the American economy and ecology depends on it?
If the entire gulf goes down you can bet that the disaster will effect each and every one of us for decades to come. BP is obviously too incompetent to be trusted and the issue is too critical NOT to fund. But I see you have no problem with sending 33B to Afghanistan. Priorities?

21. BP made the mess let them clean it up, bankrupt the SOB's. This
is another to big to fail issue for you I guess. We have a war in Afghanistan which the overwhelming majority of the American public supported including nearly all the Democrats in Congress at the time. I remind you the overwhelming majority of Americans and Democrats also supported going into Iraq at the time. The Afghanistan War was a major campaign issue for the President and most other Democrats in 2008, that was the good war according to them. Both wars were nothing more than Americans wanting revenge for 911. I was one that opposed both of them at the time, were you?

10. Transocean says their liability is capped at 27 million
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37128693/ns/business-us_business/

Taxpayers are going to end up flipping 99% of the bill on this. Privatize the profit, socialize the risk.

15. Why should we be leaving something this critical up to the incompetant fools who caused it?
The U.S. should be throwing every available resource at this problem to stop the gusher and clean up the mess. Stick BP and the other criminal thugs with the bill when it's over, but for now the Gulf can't wait!

14. BP, Halliburtan and Transocean have caused far more damage to America
than any Afghan "terrorists" could. The priorities here are THOROUGHLY f*cked up!!

And, as usual, the unrec trolls are out in force. How can they defend this bullshit?

16. NO - BP and Halliburton need to pay for this. This is one time that the taxpayers should not fund
the bill.

I was all for helping GM - even the banks because I understood how it could've affected the economy....Yes, and I am even for funding the war only because we have troops on the ground.

BUT because BP & Halliburton didn't do what was necessary to prevent this, I do not feel that taxpayers should pay.
Let these companies go bankrupt first. Oh - this makes me MAD!

18. FIX THE PROBLEM FIRST. THEN give the bill to the corporate criminals to pay
if you "trust" BP and Halliburtan to competently deal with this then you'll also have to be comfortable with the idea of a dead Gulf for decades to come. Is that really worth it? What makes Afghanistan MORE worthy of massive amounts of funding? That's a disaster brought to us by the corporation of BushCo!

24. Just saw a report yesterday about Exxon, they were
sewed for 5 billion for cleaning up the mess in Alaska and after 20 years in the courts they get off with only $500 million. How much profits have they made over those years Hmmm?
