After reading Prometheus Bound's excellent post and the follow-up comments:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4377988I was inspired to compile a letter to the editor of my local newspaper, using what I thought were the best thoughts in the thread.
Thank yous go out to Prometheus Bound, EFerrari, Bonobo, ShortnFiery, lib2DaBone, elias49 and annm4peace, for basically writing this letter for me. And anyone who agrees with the letter below, and would like to give it more exposure, should put their name as the author at the bottom, and send it to their local paper. I'm OK with that, and I'm sure the others that helped write it, are OK with that, too.
Dear Editor,
Re: 28 die in U.S. drone attack on North Waziristan (Pakistan).
<snip>The US spy planes on Tuesday launched the biggest missile attack in North Waziristan tribal region and killed 28 suspected militants and villagers in the wake of heightening tension in the Pak-US relations over Faisal Shahzad's alleged involvement in the botched New York car bombing.</snip>
http://www.thenews.com.pk Is this how we are trying to win the hearts and minds of the Pakistanis? I guess those villagers shouldn't concern themselves with the women and children killed, as they are just collateral damage.
How do we target? On whose authority do will kill by remote control? Will General McChrystal apologize to the survivors of the innocents killed? How much money do tipsters get for fingering a certain house or village as 'militant'? And we get to PAY for this evil in the name of 'security'.
This kind of crap will make us hated for a thousand years over there and they call it 'security'? I call it madness. We're basically daring angry people to come bomb us here. I really wonder if we killed even one actual murderer with our drone attack. No evidence. No trial. No follow-up. Just bomb, bomb away. Summary executions of *suspects* without charges, arrest, trial or sentencing.
This policy makes me sick to my stomach. It disgusted me during the Bush Administration, and its continuation under President Obama is not the hope and change I voted for.
I pray that if there is a God, he/she knows that many Americans had no part in this horrific evil blessed by our "leadership".
